does anyone know of the construction plan for this. Im assuming that they will need to build some deviated tracks around the bridge area which is why I see one side of those streets closed off

DTEI wrote:Stage one of our construction program is scheduled to commence May / June 2009. These preliminary works are associated with the temporary relocation of the tram tracks outside of the tram corridor so space can be made to build the overpass whilst minimising disruption to existing tram services. This will also allow construction workers to work safely within a restricted corridor, separated from trams and their associated electrical wires. These temporary tracks will be operational until the overpass structure is completed late this year.

What works will happen in Stage One?

ACTIVITY
APPROXIMATE TIMING 2009

Removal of the existing vegetation on the southern side of Norman Terrace between Fourth Avenue and South Road and on Glengyle Terrace between South Road and Burke Street.

Late May
Overhead wires and support poles for the trams will be erected for the temporary tracks in Norman and Glengyle Terraces.

Early to Mid June
The temporary tram track will be constructed along Norman Tce and Glengyle Tce. These works will involve trucks delivering rail materials and a grader to spread the materials.

Late June and Early July
A new crossing on South Road will be established for the tram to safely cross South Road.
This area of South Road will be closed for the weekend and local traffic diversions will
be in place.

Mid June
Stop 6 will be removed.

Early July
Temporary tram track becomes functional

Early July
As part of this project, there will be a number of occasions where South Road will need to be closed for a weekend period to undertake works at the intersection, particularly when construction workers will lift in heavy beams for the overpass structure. Advance notice will be given to the local and wider community prior to these closures.

What are the key traffic and access changes?

Local Access Map
Image
The above plan shows the key traffic changes to be implemented from May 2009 until the temporary tracks are removed on completion of the overpass. These changes, plus general access arrangements, are outlined below.

Local street access
* Glengyle Terrace, Glandore between South Road and Burke Street and Norman Terrace, Everard Park between Fourth Avenue and South Road will be made one way (east bound) for the period of construction.
* A concrete barrier will be erected down the centre of Glengyle Terrace and Norman Terrace to separate trams and vehicles. This concrete barrier will be approximately 1m high and have a 1m wire fence on top.
* There will be no right turns permitted from Grosvenor Street and Wellington Street onto Glengyle Terrace.
* There will also be no right turns permitted from Fourth Avenue onto Norman Terrace.

Parking
* During construction, parking will not be permitted on Glengyle Terrace between South Road and Burke Street and on Norman Terrace between Fourth Avenue and South Road (i.e. those sections where the road is narrowed to provide for the tram).
* Due to this restriction, some additional parking may occur on adjacent side streets and we ask residents on these streets to be patient during construction. We also ask that anyone parking on these side streets to be considerate of the local area and to refrain from obstructing driveways and access points. The project team is working with the local councils to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum and will monitor the local road parking impacts throughout the project.

Tram stop 6
* Tram stop 6 will be closed during construction as this area will be part of the construction site.
* Tram stop 6 will reopen as an elevated platform once the project is complete.
* Stops 5 and 7 will remain unchanged during and after construction.

Pedestrian and cyclist access
* There will be no change to pedestrian access, both on the adjacent streets and across South Road. Cyclists will be able to use Glengyle and Norman Terraces to head east, but must use the southern side of the tram tracks to head west (i.e. Aroha Terrace and Nottingham Crescent).

Bus stop arrangements
* Users will be advised of any changes to bus stop arrangements on South Road during the construction period. Some changes may be necessary as the Gallipoli Underpass project also nears completion. At the end of the overpass project, bus bays will be provided on both sides of South Road as close as possible to the pedestrian areas beneath the new overpass structure.

At the end of the project, Norman and Glengyle Terraces’ will return to a two way operation and parking will be permitted.

Any word on the pedestrian/bike overpass? There doesn't seem to be much on that website about it.

Well, it's going to be part of the overpass. What information were you after?

In other news, the temporary tram lines will be laid next weekend from Friday (12th June) at 10pm until Sunday night. Tram subs will be running while those tracks will be laid.

It's a pity they didn't think to at least stable a few trams at City West or City South to run the city shuttle services.

There are no shuttle services after 9 on Fridays and on the weekend. Services stop at 10pm on Friday until late night Sunday. The tram replacement bus still services the general area of the City Shuttle route.

Not quite, the stuff that's part of this overpass is just the elevators/walkways to give people access to the stations from either side of the road. Beyond that, the FAQ says
Q.16. How will cyclists cross South Road?

The State Government recognises the importance of catering for cyclists travelling along streets adjacent to the tram corridor. Provisions will be made for cyclists crossing South Road via measures implemented as part of this project. Investigations are currently being conducted into how to best meet the needs of cyclists in the short and long term, whilst catering for the South Road traffic and the requirements of the local community. Various options are being considered and the community will be provided with further details when they are available.
I'm talking about the "$4M on a cycle path for the Glenelg Tramway Overpass", for example, at the bottom of this press release - http://www.premier.sa.gov.au/news.php?id=4245. I believe that it's going to be a separate structure running parallel to the tram overpass.

Here's a shot of Glengyle Tce with Flexity 106 on the up track. You can see the road-bed and newly placed poles to support the overhead. Fences have also been added, increasing the height of the barrier down the middle of the road.

The South Rd crossing is behind me as I take the shot.

Thanks for the pics guys! It's certainly very interesting to see how they are going about this, because I doubt anything like this has ever been done in Adelaide before (I'm assuming the bridge over the rail lines was constructed at the same time as the entire tram line).

Looks good. The line is getting far better than I remember it - last used around 1979. wonder if they'll ever do the Goodwood Stn overpass and link it to the tramline as well (with the use of lifts).

Digging started at 10:30 Friday night as the median strip was removed. Unfortunately within half an hour or so, continuous rain had set in. Ballast is in place along most of Glenglyle Tce and there are piles of sleepers waiting at the western end of the works.
Also of interest was a discussion which I happened to overhear indicating that once the diversion was in place, the crossing will be protected by traffic lights rather than boom gates.

Here are some from today (June the 13th). When I left at 4:30pm the workers were waiting for the last concrete truck to arrive.
