or the following year, perhaps 2011, or definitely no later than 2012 or 2013, if all goes according to plan. Then again it might be pushed back just very slightly to start in 2015 or possibly 2016.

To be on the safe side, let's assume work will start in 2017 for sure, maybe.

But seriously, I think they need to think about replacing the construction site advertising sign in the next couple of years. It's starting to look a bit tired now.

Only this time they have found a builder, and I'm not sure if the building was actually included in last year's budget. Let's just hope for the best anyway. It has to be ready by 2012 anyway for the World Lifesaving Championships.

From the Guardian Messenger:
Marion jobs boost
15 Jul 09 @ 07:00am
by Matthew Turner

MORE than 700 jobs are expected to be created during the construction of the $80 million State Aquatic Centre, at Marion, to begin within eight weeks.

Keswick-based Candetti Constructions was chosen last May to build the centre as well as the $27 million GP Plus Health Care Centre both at the Domain site off Morphett Road.

Candetti CEO John Laird said part-time and full-time workers would be employed in construction, administration and management. About 400 workers would be required to build the centre with about 300 flow-on jobs created.

Mr Laird said there would be an ``element of local jobs’’ depending on the duration of the project and where the contractors were based.

``We’re getting close to starting, so it’s an exciting time,’’ he said.

A Department of Transport, Energy and Infrastructure spokesperson said construction would begin in late August and be completed inside 12 months.

A Marion Council report, released last week, estimated about 300 additional jobs would be created throughout Adelaide, owing to flow-on effects of the construction.

Swimming SA chief executive Craig Hobart said up to 130 ``mostly local’’ employees would be employed at the aquatic centre when it was fully operational.

Marion Council rubber-stamped the centre at its general meeting on Tuesday, July 7, by signing off on the project and transferring the land to the Department for Sport and Recreation for $1.

The decision switches much of the risk associated with the project from the council to the State Government, which has two years in which to construct the centre before Marion, under agreement, would get the land back.

``This is a red-letter day for Marion, the council and its residents,’’ Cr Carol Bouwens told the meeting.

Mayor Felicity-ann Lewis told the Guardian Messenger after the meeting that she was ``pretty sure it was all tied up now’’.

``We’re comfortable about where we are, having seen every part of the process the whole way through,’’ she said.

Hmmm, well. You never know, it does look like there's actually a fairly good chance that something might finally happen soonish.

Not that it's all that exciting. From what we've heard all they're planning to build is a bog basic standard boring old swimming pool. Whoop-dee-doo!

Still though, if SOMETHING finally gets built it will be a huge improvement on staring at that sign like we've been doing for the last decade or so.

I'm expecting the worst but hoping for something a little better!

I know Crawf. Sorry but I'm just expressing my frustration and disappointmennt, in the hope I might be proven wrong!

I really believe Adelaide deserves something much better than this, and that it should not have taken anywhere near so long to get built.

Finally, images are available of the new state aquatic centre:

THESE are the first images of the $80 million State Aquatic Centre, to be built at Marion.

Candetti Constructions was chosen in May to build the centre, as well as the $27 million GP Plus Health Care Centre both at the Domain site off Morphett Rd.

Recreation and Sport Minister Michael Wright said construction would begin by the end of this month.

The project is expected to create more than 700 jobs during construction, while a further 130 people would be employed for the day-to-day running of the aquatic centre.

The first photo looks nothing like Marion, whats the large flat building to the left?

The complex looks average, but they aren't good artist impressions.

I think that's the proposed GP Plus Health Centre whatsit to be built next door, although I'd think it's just there to show something in that gap, rather than as a representation of the final design.

Here is an official-looking site plan:

I had assumed they wanted to build a new medical place because the current one is in the way of the proposed new swim centre, but according to that aerial photo, they will just be swapping the car park with the building, still well out of the way of the swim centre. Can anyone enlighten me as to why they would bother? Genuinely curious...
