The surprising thing is that the government have entirely the wrong reservations about it. It's a fairly well tested technology - just an expensive one that would bring no advantage to Adelaide.

I got a few more photos of the tramline extension work yesterday during the only dry part of the day. Work has really progressed since I last walked down the eventual route. Looks like grading along the northern lane extensions along North Terrace is nearing completion. In addition, it looks like there have been some conduit replacement along Port Road thanks to night works being undertaken every night of the week.
Lane widening work on North Terrace is really moving along now with all of the former footpath now removed and the extra spoil added and graded. To the extreme right of the first photo is the current Adelaide Railcar Depot which is due to be replaced in the near future by a new facility at Dry Creek, the current depot site to be used as the site of the new Royal Adelaide Hospital. These photos were taken from a current bus stop site at the limit of public access along this part of North Terrace.
Graded spoil on the northern side of North Terrace.
The intersection of North Terrace/West Terrace/Port Road has had the former median strip graded to a smooth surface.
Earth moving and other construction equipment between North Terrace/West Terrace/Port Road intersection and Port Road bridge (over the various heavy rail lines) on either the northern side of Port Road or in the median strip).
Two of several sections of road surface where an underground conduit has been altered to suit the new tramline.

Found this photo, by Jack Daniel off SSC. The tram in the photo is similar, if not the exact model that the Government recently purchased from Madrid.
Gives a good idea of what they'll look like in Adelaide, since I'd imagine they'd also be covering them up in Adelaide Metro livery with the yellow fronts.

Shuz: The Madrid trams have a narrower body than the C2's in Melbourne, and a slightly different nose. Other than that, as far as I can tell they're the same.
Is there much work going on at the Port Road bridge over the river? Is it going to be widened?

Went past on the weekend, didn't notice anything major. A few extra road barriers here and there, and more orange flags. I couldn't tell what state the tram bridge on Port Road was in, can't see anything.

I appologise for the delay but I have got a few more photos of the project. These were taken 2 weeks ago (11/07/2009 to be precise). Photos from last week will be coming as well.
North Terrace - Trenches dug out where the new, realigned footpath is likely to go.

The first excavations made on the new footpath alignment have now been filled in and capped over.
Between North Terrace and the section of Port Road alongside Bonython Park, the scenes of construction appeared to be much the same as the week before so I didn't take any happy snaps along there. However, the section of Port Road alongside Bonython Park has had some additional work done. The temporary diversion footpath from the week before had been extended in length as more of the original footpath had been removed.
A lot of extra conduit work along this part of Port Road was also being undertaken along with what appears to have been additional clearing works. With the permission of the contractors on site, I was allowed to take the first photo and then I moved on again.
Half way on Port Road on the opposite side of the main conduit works, it looked as if (but not 100% sure) more work was being made to lay the conduits over that side.

Notice how the streetlights are still in the medium strip as well, the first sign of the tram line itself being started on would be removal of those light poles. Still an awful lot of footpath to remove before that happens.

ETSA were on site near the intersection of Adams St and Port Road last night - not too sure what they were doing though but something with the streetlights up that end in the median strip.
