There was a lot of work being done on the internals this morning. Couldn't see what was happening though. They had half of North Tce blocked off and a lot of workmen in there. Anyone have any idea what is happening in this site yet?

The PT group are doing the demo. [internally]. However the lack of any lodged plans leads me to believe its just a renovation ie no new building. The Gallerie had a big basement, this could be turned into underground carparking with access from its rear lane [off Gawler Place].

What are Adelaide's heritage listed buildings? All it says on the ACC site is that there are over 2000 'places' registered as heritage listed (since when did Adelaide have 2000 buildings!?)

Surely places such as these are given that theyre older, I don't know much for the newer post 60's era ones?

By the word 'building' they do not refer specifically to high-rise buildings. A cottage can be heritage listed, for example.

I have been following up on the internal Emporis forums, the possibility that members of the public may soon be able to create an account with Emporis, which would allow you to access all the information which is currently withheld from the public. Sales of Emporis Research have not been succesful, and I assume the senior editors realize that by making the website more accesible to the public, they may get more hits. I think that this is an exciting prospect, because there is a lot of information that the public does not get to see.

Off the topic slightly, I seem to recall some debate a couple of years ago on constructing the unfinished domed tower on parliament house.. were any designs proposed at the time or were they using the original design? I reckon this would look pretty specactular, not sure on how much was the proposed cost (I can't find anything regarding this debate on google)..

I got me thinking on how we could do something interesting and modern with the dome, like the old Reichstag building in Berlin, check this photo:

I don't know how well that'd work on Parliament House. There was a (student?) architecture competition to design a Parliament House dome a few years back which was exhibited in Adelaide Arcade. I don't know if it had any official backing, but the designs were mostly modern and more than a few drew their inspiration from the Reichstag building dome. I personally think a glass dome would work better with the Railway Station building.

I'm fairly sure I remember reading (most probably in Tim Llyod's column) that construction of the original cupola would cost around $9 million. I think it'd be bloody worth it, as it would create an impressive presence. I don't suppose most other taxpayers would though... Perhaps the private sector could sponsor it?

Ah the pics now work - those grand old Adelaide buildings look great. I do like that Polites building, it looks like something out of New York. By the way has anyone had a look at that tea/coffee lounge (forgotten the weird name - Sadechin or something) they have done in the grand ground floor foyer of the old AMP building 1936, It looks fantastic. I actually thought this was the old Commonwealth Bank building though. Was it ever?

I have. It's Saldechin (or Salon de Chinoserie). I quite liked the way it's set up. This review in the 'Tiser says it is in the "heritage-listed Commonwealth building".

The Advertiser has made a mistake, because the building was built between 1935-1936 as the state headquarters of AMP. It remained the headquarters of AMP until 1968, when the current AMP building was built. Since 1968, I do recall that the building did serve as a brach for a major bank, but I'm not sure that it was the Commonwealth Bank. It may have been used as temporary offices for the Commonwelath Bank between 1980-1983 when the current Commonwealth Bank Buildng was built, but that is just a hypothesis.
