I am going to waste a significant proportion of my life playing with this thing.

Is it just me, or are there a lot of city blocks that aren't included? Do I need to be more patient perhaps?

Excellent tool. Well done ACC! It reminds me so much of Sim City but an Adelaide version.

The height limit overlays are excellent, especially showing those buildings that are over limit and how stupid the height limits are. The shadow impacts tool which can be for any time of the year and time is very useful for developers and planners as well.

Very impressed and I'm guessing it will only get better over time.

Just tried it at work, T1 1gbps connection, and it's reasonably quick at pulling up the models but a bit longer in texturing.. CBD model came up in about 5 minutes. Still much faster than my ADSL at home.

Hope this thing is cached so we only have to load it once.

I did have an invite but was laid up with a cold so didn't get to the launch unfortunately.

Have seen it in action tho and this is a great step for the Council and will hopefully deliver better outcomes for the City as people will be able to see proposed developments not just get scared by what they think it will be.

Congrats to the Council and congrats to S-A for championing this revolution - now for the rest of the metopolitan area!!

i am impressed - a 1st for Australia! definitely a good move to go live with a draft version. I'm sure the ACC would welcome a bunch of ideas from ourselves - it's only limited by our imaginations (oh yeah, and by a budget as well)...

I'll definately be watching this with interest, and think it'd be great if we could somehow help contribute models/data to the new system.

Wayno, Darian (from the Civic Trust) and I were thinking how great it would be to have a view of Adelaide say in 1970, 1935 etc. With the massive collection of photographs floating around the place, it would be good to have a central repository and make a 360 degree panoramic views from parts of the city (such as vic square fifty years ago).

yep, just a matter of contributing time to such a project. My only concern is it *may* make certain segments of society wish harder for the return of the good ol' days - and we already have enough of a challenge in that respect But i'd definitely like to get a visual walkthrough of Adelaide through the ages.

Absolutely on the mark Wayno. It is time for the next generation of South Australian's to take the lead on how our city will look and feel. While I agree that it would be good to compare and contrast with the days of old, it may only encourage those who knew the days of old to hark back rather than support delivering a city for the future!

It was quite a good night. A nice and to the point presentation with no waffling speeches .

I was very impressed with the features some have already mentioned. The shadowing facility is brilliant. The "what if" ability of this model is very useful The overlays like planned heights, and soon to come, underground infrastructure will be very useful. (Especially to those who want to plan a subway)

I was a little disappointed that it's locked to Windows & IE6+. But I know that when you are pushing out something like this within budget you need to narrow your target to keep it under control. What's been achieved so far is exciting and it's worth pointing out again that this is a work in progress, there's a lot more to be added yet.

Very well done to all those involved -- both the 'Architects' and 'Geeks' (you had to be there )


Additionally it was nice to meet those who attended, you know who you are.

I agree with the idea of eventually being able to choose what year you can 'visit' Adelaide. It would be great to see how the city has progressed over the years. Furthermore whilst I agree that this runs the risk of generating a nostalgia factor amongst some sectors of the community, I take comfort in the knowledge that most of such people probably do not have a computer, let alone know how to use one. They probabaly still have a telegraph machine.


Another function I would also like to see is for there to be a function that allows you to see how buildings under contruction and those approved for the city will look on the city.

But nevertheless this is a great achievement.
