dont really have much of an issue about the fence in the med strip. Its in the middle of the road so its hardly for aesthetic view

I think if it had just followed the natural contour of the underpass, instead of being stepped as it is would have made all the difference.

How the Bakewell underpass which is also 4 lanes and pass under a number of rail lines and a 4 lane road cost $30 million whilst
the South Road underpass costs $130 million. I think some of these consultants and construction firms are rorting the crap
out of government. Even if you consider extreme inflation the cost shouldnt have been more than $60 million... Was it
due to workers being paid danger money to work on a busy road??? If the section they were working on was cordened off
how then are they entitled too such fees.

Firstly, the Bakewell Underpass was actually $51m and the Gallipoli underpass was $118m.

Secondly, works at the Bakewell Underpass took about 15 months compared to 30 months at the Gallipoli Underpass.

Thirdly, ANZAC Highway and South Road are both major roads with major road traffic going through it pretty much all the time. Henley Beach Road and James Condon Drive particularly carry less traffic, and most of it was diverted around the construction zone.

Fourthly, there are only on and off ramps on the western side of the underpass, while they have both the southern and northern off-ramps at the Gallipoli Underpass.

Fifthly, there was property aquisition on the western side of South Road, compared to none at the Bakewell Underpass

And lastly, you should compare the size of both of them, the Gallipoli underpass site is much larger to that of the Bakewell Underpass.

I would expect that the property acquisition was the big factor in the difference in costs. Every property on the western side, including several businesses, was relocated or demolished. The compensation for that would not be cheap, easily an 8 figure sum.

i belive this is the first render of the South Road/Sturt Rd underpass.

From The Messenger:
$6m planning study for South Rd underpass at Bedford Park

by Lauren Pitman

THE Federal Government will fund a $6 million planning study for an underpass and possible rail extension for South Rd at Bedford Park.

State Transport Minister Patrick Conlon says the upgrade will ensure a ``free-flowing north-south corridor’’ to complement the Gallipoli Underpass at Anzac Hwy.

``Identifying exactly what needs to be done at Bedford Park is the next part of the process,’’ he said.

The 18-month study starting this month will plan an underpass for the South-Sturt roads intersection and also will investigate extending the Tonsley rail line to Flinders Medical Centre.

Announcing the funding, Federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese said it was a ``complex’’ section of South Rd.

``At the completion of this study we will know exactly what is possible and what the preferred scheme is, the project will then be ready to go to tender,’’ he said.

The contract is part of almost $9 million allocated for planning works as well as $500 million for further South Rd upgrades as part of the Federal Budget.

The State Government has contributed $300,000 to planning and a total of $430 million toward South Rd projects.

As for whether the Bedfrod Park upgrade would involve compulsory acquisition of homes and businesses, such as occurred with the Gallipoli Underpass, a spokesman for Mr Conlon said: ``The planning study will include community engagement ... once it is complete we will know exactly what is possible and what the preferred scheme is.’’

$6m planning study for South Rd underpass at Bedford Park...
wouldn't it be cheaper to keep south rd at ground level and underground sturt rd? shorter development delays too...
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Cheaper yes, but South Road would still then have traffic lights; thereby making redundant the purpose of making it a free-flowing north-south corridor.

We had this one a few years back. I think the old one looks more practical than the new one as it'll allow simultaneous right turn movements.

And sigh at more planning. I thought they were planning this all years ago? If not, where did this render come from? What about the over-the-top render of Flinders Railway Station?

re. South Rd / Sturt Rd intersection, would it make sense to have a roundabout at ground level instead of traffic lights? and would a roundabout need a wider overpass bridge?

The answer is that there is a big difference between a $6million dollar plan and a "The premier/minister want a render to put in the paper can you have one ready by tomorrow" plan.

has anyone heard anything more about the next stage of the south road upgrade - the section between regency and prexy which is due for construction next year? given that the project has an estimated value of $750 million and funding committed, i am surprised that there has been limited media attention/news on it.

Each morning I see the traffic banked up from the train line and port rd back to torrens road at Croydon . I got excited when they said they were going to build a tunnel between Grange. Then quick as a flash they canceled it ! I drive through the new Anzac highway underpass and was happy to see they finally took down the 40km signs and fitted 60km . But I cannot work out why they are spending 32million on the tram overpass ? I have never been caught at this line and if I have its very brief , so why do it and leave South rd between Port and Grange rd a disgusting and dangerous eyesore .
I cannot see anything mentioning the plans for this strip of road , just some mention of " studies" as to what they might do .
I have also noticed that premises between Grange and Port rd are for sale , probably by the government , an indication that they have dropped the whole idea of fixing this mess up a long time ago .

I sent an email to someone who had something to do with south rd upgrade and they said a Sturt rd underpass was in the plans ????
All I can tell is people who live in Blackwood can get to Marion quicker while South rd.

Hey maybe I'm wrong ...Can someone please post a link that tells me what is actually happening.

No link, but things are being done in order of priorty and cost/benefit.

South Road/Anzac highway was the highest priority and had the highest cost/benefit, so that was #1
Sturt road is next, same reason.

Regarding the tunnels etc I think it was put off due to cost, these things not hundreds of millions, but billions. I suspect it is still on the cards though.

As for the tram overpass its really a part of the anzac highway project in the grand scheme of things. I Suspect that it was given a high priority for political reasons because the government would have had a white elephant if the underpass was grade separated but not the tram line.

i am still very surprised that the upgrade from north of grand junction to prexy - which is going to be a major project - has had limited discussion in this forum, nobody seems to know much about it but it is due to start next year - the feds have agreed to the funding
