Property Council's Adelaide 2036: Building on Light's Vision
Dear S-A Community
Just a quick update to let you know that we will be releasing our vision for the CBD, titled Adelaide 2036: Building on Light's Vision on Tuesday 27 October (more info here http://www.propertyoz.com.au/library/Ad ... 6Final.pdf).
The Report covers the areas of Governance, Livability, Urban Design, Places and Spaces for people, Economic Development and Residential Population. It should be pretty interesting and I hope that it is going to generate a lot of debate about the future of the city and for once result in some tangible actions!
Cheers
Nathan

Re: Property Council's Adelaide 2036: Building on Light's Vision
Your not the only one! I first thought about developing this vision back when I started in 2006 as a follow up to our Adelaide The Way Forward Report in 2000 - it has only taken me three years to get it done!
Thankfully I have had the advantage of a solid team of members that want to deliver a better city to serve the community so that has made it alot easier and with the election around the corner hopefully we will be able to force some action.
Cheers

I too await this report.
I just have a question for you Nathan. You mention that you created the report with the help of a team. I'm curious to know, what type of people you employed in elaborating the report; i.e. architects, urban planners, politicans, lawyers, students.....?

Will
The team was made up of members including financiers, urban designers, architects, planners, developers and other key stakeholders. It was then discussed by my Division Council which is a cross section of property owners, developers, engineers, architects, planners etc. This Report has been through the wringer more than once so I hope that it sates peoples desires for a better city.
We also relied heavily on the great work done in the past by Thinkers such as Jan Gehl - the reality is that Adelaidians have been discussing these issues for decades and in the case of Vic Square almost a century (someone dug up an article article from The Advertiser in the 1920s that had a raging debate about Vic Square)!!
Cheers

Thanks Nathan. It seems like an interesting mix of people, however I was wondering whether it would be good in future to include other professions, particulalry those related to mental health. The reason why I think this would be a good idea, would be because if Adelaide were a person I think she would suffer from depression. As such, having people which can translate strategies used to alter the cognition of depressed people may help develop strategies to correct the collective depression experienced by our population.PropertyozSA wrote:Will

Re: Property Council's Adelaide 2036: Building on Light's Vision
S-A Community Members,
Here we go! I am pleased to bring you the Property Council’s new blueprint for Adelaide’s CBD - Adelaide 2036: Building on Light’s Vision.
We will be providing a copy of this Report to both the Government and the Opposition requesting their responses to the 47 recommendations it contains. In so doing we are forcing our political leaders to either take action or take responsibility for the lack of it.
We are firmly saying that the time for debate is over and the time for action has come. We cannot continue to sit around the coffee table and talk, talk, talk – something we have proven over the last century to be very good at – but now we must act, act, act.
I hope that over the coming days, our Vision will generate vigorous debate that ultimately results in a much better city.
The Report, Media Release and vlog can be found here http://www.propertyoz.com.au/sa/Article ... 16&id=2194
If you want to have a chat about the Report please do not hesitate to contact me.
Cheers

Thanks Nathan, i'll have a read of this later today.
All the best with the scans mate.

Re: Property Council's Adelaide 2036: Building on Light's Vision
Nice work, i'll check it out today. In the meanwhile, it's up on the front page of S-A today.
Re: Property Council's Adelaide 2036: Building on Light's Vision
Just having a read of it as we speak. And it's a good read too
Here's my
Objective #1: Governing the Central City for the Communities of the State
Very interesting that this is the first objective. Hopefully I don't offend our councillors who visit these forums, but the issues surrounding the cause of many development 'flashpoints' between the state government and the ACC needs to be addressed... it really getting to the point where mediation isn't enough. But will yet another state government position/authority solve this problem, who knows. By the way, does anyone actually know what the Minister for City of Adelaide actually does? Because I certainly don't.
Objective #2: Designing the Central City to Unleash Potential
The Advertiser/AdelaideNow seemed to have picked up on the PCA's comparison's to Melbourne and ran with it unfortunately (article titles "like Adelaide to be more like Melbourne"). But i'm happy to see references to Jan Gehl's study, and very excited to see relaxing of building height limitations/review of airport flightpaths. An issue we've been trying to push for many years here at S-A. There has been lots of talk about reinvigorating our laneways in the past couple of years, we really need to see this happen and now's the time to do it.
Objective #3: Moving People to and Around the Central City
Agree with East loop, relocation of interstate rail terminal, improved signage towards central city. Would love to see more details of Grenfell/Currie Street transmit mall, I think that's a very exciting idea.
Objective #4: Building the Central City as the State's Business Hub
Seperate targets for job creation in the CBD is an excellent idea I think. Not sure about Green Innovation precinct on current RAH, I still think it's premature to start making plans for a hospital that still stands there.. but that's probably another thread right there. Targets for retail floorspace of 15% within ten years is a good start also.
Objective #5: Boosting the Residential Population of the Central City
All very good suggestions. One person on this forum had said, who on earth would pay $XXXX for a one bedroom apartment when you could buy a house in the suburbs for that much. I think your suggestion (#4) to remove the stamp duty disincentive to multi-level residential dwellings compared to an equivalent house and land package goes someway to alleviate that issue. Once again much has been said to grow the population in the CBD, by the council, by the state government, by organisations everywhere... I would love to see that happen.
Objective #6: Creating and Marketing a Dynamic Central City
Can't say i've heard too much about the Postcode 3000 campaign in Melbourne, that's probably because I live in Adelaide and hardly go down that way. Anyhow that's something for me to google a little later. Cheers for that.
All in all, very well presented, hopefully the PCA can get some of these objectives onto the government's agenda for the upcoming election. Best of luck!
