Surprising ammount of greenery in the southwestern suburbs in that low-angled shot.

City development - it's make or break time

#587 Post by Port Adelaide Fan » Mon Dec 28, 2009 10:48 pm

ADELAIDE faces a "make or break" year and must deliver on major projects to revitalise the city centre, a leading architect warns.

Australian Institute of Architects SA chapter president Tim Horton said a "massive change" was on the horizon as attention turned to development of the Torrens riverfront, former Clipsal site and railyards precinct.

"I'm sensing a real change in the way we do things and I think 2010 is the real make or break," Mr Horton told The Advertiser .

"You've got a government saying that we're open for business and the eastern states, who have been traditionally very strong, have lost a lot of their market," he said.

"People are looking for new ground to try and South Australia will be a major target. Managed well, that will be to the long-term benefit of the state and breed innovation."

Property Council of Australia SA executive director Nathan Paine said Adelaide had to overcome interests intent on blocking development in the city's broader interest.

Premier Mike Rann yesterday announced a board of planners and architects would be appointed to oversee SA's future development activities.

Thinker in Residence Laura Lee suggested the Integrated Design Commission, which will advise the Government on creating a "more vibrant city for pedestrians and cyclists as well as cars".

Opposition planning spokesman David Ridgway said the commission must be completely independent and review the Government's decision to build a new hospital on the railyards site.

"I just wonder who's going to be on this commission and whether they are going to be friends of the Government or people who can provide fearless and frank advice," he said yesterday.

Mr Rann denied the commission would simply become "another level of bureaucracy".

`"We've had debates about heritage versus development and the result has been a patchwork quilt that is patched, not interwoven," he said.

"I want South Australia to be celebrated for excellence in design as we are for our wines, our festivals, our leadership in renewable energy."

Anyone know what is to be built on the NW corner of Wakefield St and East Tce? The block has been demolished (damned if I can remember what was there!). It is opposite the east parklands and a playground.

Yeah, I've heard that they've moved the kids from the junior school to the senior school whilst the junior school is rebuilt as part of the economic stimulus package.

Yup. They will be openning sometime in March, I think. Damn inconvenient - I needed them yesterday! :)

AdelaideNow says it'll be closed until "the middle of 2010" - It'd be a pain to have to walk to the Central Market or to the IGA over from the RAH.

Obviously Woolies want to be done before the proposed supermarket under Harris Scarfe is built (if it's still going ahead). Goodbye to checkouts open to the mall - good thing or bad thing?

It can only be a good thing for the Central Market (and unfortunately Coles).

Might be the width of your screen mate. The whole northern facade of the building's showing for me.

If using Firefox (and probably others) hold Ctrl & press - until the picture appears. Hold Ctrl & press + to reverse the process.
