Hi Clr Yarwood, can we presume the ACC is working with the relevant authorities to increase height limitations? It would seem to be a necessary first step. Here's a reasonably representative step-wide approach to finding out just how high we really can go:

The Steps to Achieve
SENSATIONALADELAIDE recommends the following general approach:
1. ACC to encourage State Government bi-partisan support in demystifying air safety limitations
2. ACC to encourage all ACC Councilors to publicly champion this cause
3. ACC to obtain further industry input and partner with key players to build a compelling argument for change
4. ACC to seek consultation and work with Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), Adelaide Airport Limited (AAL), Air Services Australia (ASA), and DOTARS to clarify PANS-OPS descriptions and diagrams
5. ACC, in conjunction with the SA Govt, to require the AAL master plan to be updated and maintained using intuitive terms and diagrams
6. ACC, in conjunction with the SA Govt, to require AAL to regularly upgrade technologies (e.g. radar systems) where such change allows for increased building heights, and further removes bureaucracy from the development assessment process
7. ACC to revise Development Guidelines to include 3-5 policy area zones as permitting maximum height iconic buildings (e.g. PA-14, PA-15, PA-16). Also identify and reserve several CBD addresses as firm candidates for maximum height iconic buildings of architectural significance (commercial and industrial). ACC to actively promote development of these sites and reject “under-height” development applications
8. ACC to relax height limitation policy in other policy zone areas, moving away from the central pyramid notion. In particular, focus on the creation of high-rise TOD-style development clustered around the 5 CBD squares
9. ACC to create and publicly maintain a 3D model showing the PANS-OPS, OLS and ACC Development Guidelines surfaces overlaid on Adelaide & North Adelaide

As for steps – in my mind its:

Get building heights locked into Development Plan Review (required under Section 30 of the Development ACT) as a high priority.

This is DONE; it is not the highest priority (I tried to make it 32 behind sustainabilty but lost that fight) but behind Heritage (mostly done) and Sustainability (started). Population (including heights) is next which means 2011 kick off and 2012 finish.

Second step is to make sure the right council gets in that can see this through – elections in November I have been told.

Third step is to start investigations and research by having the right $ in budget.

Then all of below as per your list. It will happen if I have anything to do with it!

Perhaps Nathan Paine and his friends could find some $$$ to help fund this investigation/research? It would certainly be aligned to their goals! Imagine having all the facts on the table ready for the new council - certainly closer to a fait accompli...

Bernard Salt (Guru demographer) places the Australian baby boomer between 1946 and 1961 – that means the oldest of them just turned 64…retirement of the biggest population profile is imminent.

They are generally over gardening, their house is too big and no-one likes visiting them in the suburbs as it’s out of the way.

High rise living will appeal to these people so they can visit the art gallery, museum and like with friends and grandchildren who have an excuse to come into town.

Apartment buildings will be in demand – if there is demand fueled by population profiles it will happen…look at the Gold Coast!

I meant 50 plus stories…in my world it’s possible, it’s just when not if. Every major project requires 10 years of focussed effort IMO.

David P does a great job of reporting and has inspired me to get more done. Update is I am now blogging (maybe 3 times a week) and also on Twitter evry day via iphone – which I am loving!

Check out page 19 of Advertiser today, I’m proposing an Iphone app for Council. Opportunities are almost endless – updates, services etc.

What would you guys have in a Council iPhone (or Google) app?

I don't have an iPhone and I'm not planning on getting one so I can't really comment on what I'd like to see in an iPhone app.

I would just like it if the council website was updated more often with more detailed information about private development proposals and public projects like Vic square upgrade and North Terrance stage 3. There is nothing about NT stage 3 on the site at the moment and I'm assuming there was some community consultation process and subsequent report for the Vic Square upgrade. Surely it wouldn't hurt if people other than staff and councillors had access to these reports.

A weekly poll would be a good thing. To be able to obtain a sample poll, say from a potential market of 5,000 people each week, would give a fairly reliable indication of an issue's popularity, and Council should utilise that data to influence policy-making and decisions. However, I do believe that such a thing could run the risk of being over-ridden by minority groups; so unless there is an overwhelming number of support or dissent (say a minimum of 80%) then the council has a supreme majority mandate to facilitate those policy decisions. Democracy at its best.

Should have a development review section; similar to what we have here on S-A. What new development is occurring? How is the council somewhat responsible for it? This would help craft a more positive attitude towards the ACC. Getting people actively interested about our city, it's future, it's past, it's present.

Could also have a "heritage highlight" of the week, showcasing the history of one of the older structures within the CBD? Make it an educational resource; People can learn from that, and perhaps next time they catch the tram or something, they can see heritage highlight in question and tell their friend. Word of mouth can do much to improve civic pride, something the whole of Adelaide could really use. It would stand to improve the geographical intelligence quotient of many! Could vary from buildings, to where the trams used to run, to old street names, different uses of places in the past. Or simply things that never came about... like trains running under King William Street as part of the MATS plan? It could stimulate of a lot of interest and discussion which could translate into action?

Hope some of these things are implemented. I would use it!

Agreeing with ChrisRT, I'd prefer the council to concentrate on sharing information in some open format, the website doesn't even have feeds and isn't updated frequently enough. Invest your effort in making the information as public and discoverable as possible, and then leave it up to the community to worry about writing the apps for specific platforms on top of that.
