I disagree. The people of Adelaide do not know what is good for their city. The government hopefully will continue to see how visionary the tram extension is. Furthermore they could difuse the fuss that has been created by the trees, but stating that they will compensate for the loss of the trees, by planting 10 000 trees in the parklands or somewhere else.

To answer all your question, the extension to North Adelaide was the original proposal, but it was dropped in favour of extending the tram line to City West. However in future the tram line may still be extended to North Adelaide.

If Melbourne can make the Tram system work - with much more traffic and more trams - why can't Adelaide? I agree with earlier stated thoughts that it will take a little longer during construction - however, there ARE other ways through the city - and big thoroughfares at that!. Adelaide has ever retained that legacy of Light's that is the envy of many in the eastern cities.

In my opinion it's time for possibility thinking to replace the short sighted staus quo approach. Adelaide is a city after all.

i suppose when you think about there are like 100 other routes (exaggeration) into the city, and itll save having to catch the beeline to get to vic sq, but really, melbourne has trams all over the place and they cope, so i am pretty sure that well cope, itll probably just take some adjusting to.

Next week the Adelaide City Council's DAP will vote to support the tram extension to City West.

I was wrong in claiming that this was a symbolic gesture because I have since discovered that the council has to approve such a proposal due to the Development Act of 1993 and the Local Government Act of 1999.

However good news!

ADELAIDE City Council has approved the latest plans for the city tramline extension.

The panel of three council members and four independent experts last night voted to back plans extending the tramline to North Tce, with only Councillor Anne Moran voting against the proposal.

Earlier, State Government Office of Major Projects and Infrastructure executive director Rod Hook said the Government would consider the council's recommendations, but had the power to override them if the plan was knocked back. "We have made a number of changes in this application responding to issues that council asked us to look at," he said.

Ms Moran was opposed to the removal of 67 trees and the changes the tramline extension would cause to the streetscape and traffic.

"I think it is an ill-thought out plan that benefits nobody, to extend a tramline just over a kilometre for $31 million," she said.

But she rightly predicted before the meeting that other panel members would approve the plan, saying that "it will go through like a hot knife through butter".

Mr Hook said the Government hoped to relocate or replace as many of the removed trees as possible.

He also said there were plans to incorporate "high-quality" public art into the design of five new stop shelters, designed by artists from the Jam Factory. He said the art may incorporate symbols of the city such as the Town Hall clock, Parliament House and Rundle Mall's Balls, with each stop having a "separate identity".

She is also against any developement in Victoria Park and while i respect not all developemnts are for the good, she seems to be against almost all development. She was a very vocal opposition to the the developement on the old le-cornu site at North Adelaide as well (interesting to note she herself lives in North Adelaide). I think she is way too conservative and not what Adelaide needs on their Development Assesment Panel. Atleast it's good to see she no longer has as much power under the new panel, which most I'm sure are more educated than herself.

She approved our development

and the North Adelaide society were against that... but yeah overall too anti-development by far, but if you think about it thats her electrol base, because only geriatric opnianated wankers can be bothered to vote in council elections. If we want change we need to enfranchise younger people and get them to vote!

Are you for real? I vote in the council elections cos I want my voice to be heard. We have seen what happens when the wrong people are voted in.
