Cruising in Adelaide via Neons

#1 Post by RayRichards » Sun Mar 21, 2010 6:13 pm

Yesterday I visited Adelaide to catch up with the boys at the club and to pick up a part for the ride and before I knew it, it was night. I checked out the new Entertainment Centre which look you beaut and decided to hit the Port to see if a mate was home. Riding over the newly built bridge at the Port (and what a delight to see the neons lighting up that beast) made me think what other bridges and tunnels that are lit up which makes cruising in town just that more interesting.

The tunnel on Henley Beach road under the railway line looks good (there is a top photo taken by someone here of this tunnel) and the bridge over the railway line at Mawson Lakes. But I was very dissapointed the Anzac Hwy underpass and the tram overpass are not even lit up at all? Hearing about the top light display at the festivals made me think Adelaide could get into lights as a type of local tourism. Are the lights still used on the trees at North Tce? I hope so. And the LED?? display above HJs on Rundle/Pultney St corner rock. :D

We all know blokes have a thing for neons and we should utilise it more, especially on the tall buildings in the CBD. I reckon the State Bank building would be good decked out in neons. Going down parts of Main North/Main South road and seeing all the lit up advertisements makes it look good.

What do you think about decking out Adelaide to salute the man who shaped this town? Makes his name 'Light' a top tribute.

Ray.

I reckon that would be a great idea! I love the current trend of 'light' developments with the Rundle Lantern and EC.

I guess making the Northern Lights permanent would be a great step in the right way for this idea and extending the Rundle Lantern.

I doubt extending the Rundle Lantern would actually improve it much. But making the Northern Lights a permanent feature would indeed be good, though getting suitable projectors could be a problem.

Extending the Rundle Lantern might not improve the lantern itself much, but it would certainly cover up more of the eyesore that it's mounted on. ;)

Do any of you guys remember the mother of them all at the Hindley/ Morphett St intersection before they widened Morphett St on the north side of Hindley. removed in the 1970's. It was located on the SW corner for 'Peter Styvesant' smokes and ran along Hindley st about 50m on the top of the shops - changing all the time - full of colour variations. Big and VERY impressive - be good to see more. The truncated version of the shops are still there on the SW corner.

I would absolutely be in favour of a giant neon cigarette packet lighting up Hindley St. Now that would twist the knickers of the establishment into irreparable knots.

I do believe that is a Dodge Neon, one of the less egregious examples of the "oddly placed bulges" school of American car design.

I thought it may have been a Chrysler Neon. Very subtle Omi :)

Love the bags of garbage behind the car!
cheers,
Rhino
