What is going on with City South tram stop? Who is in charge and why has it not been upgraded to the same standard as the rest of the stops?

It's pretty embarrassing that nothing has been done considering all the work that has gone on in the past couple of years.

Anything on the cards?

Regards.
You know what though, as bad as these stops are the look a million times better then whatever it is they have done to the port roads stops. they look cheap tacky and temporary, yet unfortunatly they are not... sorry to post off topic stuff.

Hi david,

I rememebr some time ago Anne Moran talking in the media about a possible ban on smoking in the mall. Has the proceeded any further then the suggestion stage? This would be great for the amenity of the mall and also deter the groups that congregate in certian ares (entrance to the myer centre to name one) and smoke and generally be unsociable.
In answer to the bold - this very concept is seriously being considered for the Queen St Mall in Brisbane now. Will have to let you all know the outcome.

I can confirm that there is a canopy proposed over the King William Road footpath for the new office tower.

In general canopies are sought by staff within the assessment process. The Development Plan encourages the provision of pedestrian shelters along designated pedestrian routes within the City however DA staff do seek such protection throughout the entire City where possible.

Re the tram stops – yes, definitely State Government – will keep in mind as it’s a good call.

Bit of an update from me too…

Council budget goes to next Tuesday meeting – consultation will kick off a few days later – David and I will ensure you get the link to the web page. Busy time for councillors as there is lots to read and negotiate!

The staff seemed to miss the idea that the internet could be used (i.e. Facebook/Twitter) to push people to the page – I think I am getting that message across finally!

I’m doing a Motion on Notice at the next meeting re having a clean city campaign – let’s communicate the message that cigarette butts and litter is NOT ON. One thing to clean up a mess, another to ask people not to make the mess in the first place!

I have a MBA exam next Wednesday – after that all is left is 2 subjects which I will be doing at Summer School in Denmark – I won an Adelaide Uni scholarship and will be there for 3 weeks in June/July.

Baby Oliver is walking and turns 1 on ANZAC day - he's great fun!

Given that I work in the city and am often there otherwise, it has seemed to me that the place is getting rather scummy. The recent rain has somewhat cleared the mess, but litter is still far too commonplace.

So I'm glad that the council (or you, yourself) have picked up on it. I do, however, have reservations about the effectiveness of an awareness campaign, given that: 1) such campaigns are not often successful (the Grim Reaper being a notable exception); 2), yours will have to make do with the meagre resources of a single LGA; and 3), most people are already aware that littering is wrong. I suggest, then, that it might be better for the council to either co-operate with other governments on a larger-scale campaign with more suitable funding, or otherwise tackle the issue by focusing on enforcement and/or street cleaning (aren't people more likely to respect a place that is well-maintained?).

Covered SRW, that is part of the proposal – partnerships with state govt and other relevant bodies. It also includes investigations into e waste because that is being misses at present.

I cannot help but wonder if people know its wrong why our city streets are full of rubbish?

Ah, jumped the gun a bit, I did. Good to hear.

Oh, I'm sure people know there's something morally questionable about littering, they just don't always rank it in the highest order. So I guess that's where your awareness campaign comes in -- to put the consequences of littering front and centre in their minds.

I propose smacking litterers in the face. That would give them a surprise - no sooner has their burger wrapper left their hand and fallen to the ground than some speedy Omi leaps up and delivers a swift slap across the mouth. I feel I might just enjoy that, too.

By the time you'd thwacked all the butt-dropping smokers, you'd be too exhausted to wander down to Maccas or Hungry Jacks!

An annual Thwacking Day - volunteers needed!
