AT LAST!!!

Thanks AG for the info concerning ACC. Ms. Moran seems to belong to the old guard that typified the attitude to most development in the 70' to 80's. I recall businesses being frustrated to the point of inaction with this kind of thing and Adelaide lost out big time.Now they're cutting through the rot and something is happening!

In stating the above, however, I note it has been a long haul to get 1.2 Km of track just the same.

How long ago was the tram project put forward - 1 to 2 years? And how much has this added to the cost - thus adding fuel to anti tram develpment? Seems like political gradualism at it's height to me (victory through stealth over time).

Anyway - I rejoice with you guys - it all seems much more certain now!

Very interesting. The trams will be over grass though Victoria Square. There's also going to be signals installed at the corner of North Tce and Station Rd, which has always been 'fun' as a pedestrian to cross. My only concern so far is it looks like the footpath of North Tce will be narrowed.

I think it looks sensational!

With just this modest tramline extension it will pave the way for further extensions throughout the city perimeter, to North Adelaide/ Melbourne St and the Port!

Can one person dare to dream......and have Rundle Street blocked off to traffic paved and replaced with Trams that could turn left or right onto pultney!!!???.

I like the fact that those ugly railings in victoria square will be removed. And the current line penetrating from the south will be obsolete - so in fact we get more parklands ! hooray!

That's a nice looking report, tried calling the Project # (1300 884 087) but it's engaged. Wan't to find out where to pick up a printed copy or if they'd like to mail one out to me

I dont think there will be more parkland as the new lines will cut into the western edge of Vic Square. Vehicle traffic lanes will remain the same.

Just had a short vist to Adelaide - trawled through everthing I could find and spoke to everyone I could get. Rang the top man in the state for infrastructure and said the tram extension WILL go ahead, WILL start in mid 2007 and the funds ARE available. This is despite public outcry and resistance. He was VERY assertive about this.

The paper mentioned either yesterday or today (IIRC) that the construction of the tram line extension will begin in April this year.

A PLACARD protest by Liberal MP David Ridgway against the removal of trees in the city to make way for the Glenelg tram extension lasted only a few hours before he was ordered to take down the posters.

The Adelaide City Council warned Mr Ridgway he would face a $80 fine for each poster if he did not take them down.

The Opposition environment spokesman, along with his seven-year-old son Louis, had been up since 4.30am putting posters on some of the 70 trees in Victoria Square and North Tce, which will be taken out to accommodate the tram line extension.

The posters said` "Don't kill the trees for your trams Mr Rann."

Mr Ridgway said he had agreed to the council's request to take the posters down, saying "'I have made my point."

The State Government is going to spend $31 million extending the Glenelg tram line down King William St, then along North Tce to the University of SA campus.

"The SA public is not fully aware of the huge number of mature trees that will be axed for the tram project and how this will affect the environment of central Adelaide," Mr Ridgway said.

"The tram extension is not only a gross waste of $31 million of taxpayers' money, which could be better spent on water infrastructure, it is now also an environmental embarrassment."

Mr Ridgway said the mature trees doomed for removal were vital in negating the greenhouse gases that contributed to climate change and in providing scarce habitat for birds and other animals in the city.

If he's really worried about the environment then he should be encouraging anything that gets the air polluting cars off the road and get more people using the less harmful public transport. Less cars and more public transport will do far more for the environment than a handful of trees, which the council have said will simply be planted elsewhere anyway. Politics at its worst.

Id like to say that I got in first my pulling down some of the posters before the council did. I even got abused but Im quite proud. I cant believe the liberals have used a environmental approach, when the whole idea of extending the tramline is to get people out of cars and lessen greenhouse gasses. No one why the liberals have the lowest opinion polls ever, they are dumb and dumber
