ANZAC Day - Lest we forget

#1 Post by yousername » Sun Apr 25, 2010 7:48 am

ANZAC Day - 25 April - Lest we forget
Anzac Day is a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand, and is commemorated by both countries on 25 April every year to honour members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who fought at Gallipoli in Turkey during World War I. It now more broadly commemorates all those who died and served in military operations for their countries. Anzac Day is also observed in the Cook Islands, Niue, Samoa and Tonga.

Mate, seriously consider going next year.

All, what's the significance of the Jolly Roger (Skull & Crossbones) banner? I saw some diggers on the TV marching with one - twas Sydney i believe.
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

here in the east In the 1980's the public support of Anzac Day reached a low ebb. Not a lot of younger people. Very happy this did not fade out - better educated about it... and as Wayno says - get along and see/feal the reality of it all - very moving and helps solidify the national identity/mateship/loyalty fading quickly 25 years ago. Never seen so many flags as now in so many places - even in our street on flagpoles etc.

BTW anyone heard of current proposals to remove the union jack. Would not go down well in RSL and armed forces who have fought under this. Would not worry me if it stayed as it represents our heritage, not empire membership like once.

SA- STATE ON THE MOVE
Jack.

Just as an aside: The RSL is a changed organisation, most of those in charge now are of Vietnam vintage rather than WW2.
Exit on the right in the direction of travel.
