The council did trial a two hours free deal over last Xmas, not sure how it went. But the council owned UParks around Rundle Mall (and Central Market) are rated so the first two hours are far cheaper than long term parking to encourage shoppers in those parks and discourage all day parkers.pushbutton wrote:Sorry if it's been said before but Skyliners avatar has just made me think that a really simple way to encourage more people to shop in Rundle Mall would be to try offering 2 hours free parking in any carpark in the CBD (funded by the council). Each carpark could have a certain percentage of its spaces dedicated to shoppers and a certain percentage for people parking all day (to work in the city centre). The all day spaces would be on the top levels of the carparks making it a bit easier for shoppers to get in and out throughout the day.

WELL-known men’s fashion retailer Axel Beers is closing its doors after nearly three decades in town.
The formalwear shop, which opened in Francis St just off Rundle Mall in 1983, is likely to close next month.
Owner Axel Beers said he had “fallen victim” to the planned $150 million Harris Scarfe redevelopment.
The Harris Scarf building, along with four others, will be bulldozed to make way for an already approved 13-storey office and retail tower, although a date for construction works has not been set.
“When they do the redevelopment and the buildings get demolished we’ll get demolished with it,” Mr Beers said.
“We’re not really happy about it but we’ve got to be realistic.”
Mr Beers said he was unable to find another premises to relocate to because Mall rents were too expensive and he did not want to be in a shopping centre.
“We’re not interested in all those shopping centres and that there’s no atmosphere and the rent would kill us. If we want to re-site ourselves we want to do it in a situation we’re happy with and we haven’t found that.”
The Harris Scarfe redevelopment, first proposed in 2008, now hinges on the sale of the City Council’s Grenfell St U-Park so the basement can be used for truck loading and level four for carparking.
Public consultation on revoking the carpark’s community land status for sale to Australian Pacific Supermarkets, the company behind the overhaul, closed yesterday, (Wednesday, May 5).

It's the second time they have said that in 2 weeks. PARKING costs in the Rundle Mall precinct could increase if the proposed sale of the city council-owned Grenfell St UPark goes ahead.
Key Rundle Mall property figures told The Advertiser if the council finalised its plan to sell the 504-space carpark, it must maintain control of the pricing structure to stop a commercial owner increasing prices.
Adelaide Arcade Pty Ltd chairman Ian Wilson said unless current pricing was maintained the sale would have a very serious effect on retailers in the Mall.
"Rundle Mall and all the branch shopping centres, Adelaide Arcade included, are competing with regional shopping centres that have free parking," he said.
"What Adelaide City Council should be doing is keeping their car parks and managing them so they are not filled up with all day parkers . . . "

Regent Arcade owner Zis Ginos agreed the council must maintain control of the carpark to keep parking in the area affordable.
"I think that the council is responsible to provide cheaper and better carparking for shoppers," he said.
"Whoever buys it (the carpark) should be forced to keep the council's rates or cheaper.
"The only way to get more shoppers is to provide easier and cheaper carparks."
Rundle Mall retailer Dennis Karis, who owns a number of shops including Shades, said the sale of the carpark would be a "sad loss".
It's very important they don't give that carpark to commercial operator because it will push prices up," he said
"People do get upset when they see parking prices have come up."
At the May 10 Adelaide City Council meeting, a motion was carried for the council to seek approval from the State/Local Government Relations Minister to revoke the current Community Land classification of the site so it could be sold.
Lord Mayor Michael Harbison said the future of the redevelopment of Harris Scarfe in Rundle Mall hinges on the sale of the carpark.
"We wouldn't agree to sell such a prime asset if it wasn't going to be so important for the future retail in the city," he said.
Mr Harbison said he believed any commercial owner would seek to fill the carpark and therefore prices would not increase.
"No you can't guarantee it (that a commercial owner would not increase prices) but you can make a reasonable prediction based on market factors and owners desire to make an income."

then again, who knows? maybe the developers will add a couple of extra levels to accomodate for parking which would raise the height? I'm trying to be optimistic here, please don't bring me down
