There's also drainage works underway between Seaford Road and Lynton Terrace at Seaford.

Early works for the Seaford Rail Extension project will commence in late March 2010.

These works will involve the construction of a road bridge at Goldsmith Drive, Noarlunga Centre, and significant drainage upgrades south of Seaford Road. In addition to these items, service relocations and the establishment of site offices and compounds will be undertaken.

During the bridge works at Goldsmith Drive, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction on Goldsmith Drive 80 metres from west of the roundabout at Lovelock Drive/Burgess Drive. Speed restrictions of 25kph will also be in place throughout the works. Following the completion of these works, Goldsmith Drive will operate as a road bridge such that the rail line can be extended underneath.

As above, works will also be undertaken between Seaford Road and Griffiths Drive to install an underground stormwater drainage pipe to the east of the future rail line. This work will result in temporary diversions of the Coast to Vines Rail Trail between Seaford Road and Lynton Terrace for the duration of the works. Download the following flyer for further detail.

These works are expected to commence in late March 2010 are scheduled for completion in August 2010.

All works outlined above with generally be undertaken between the hours of 7am and 5pm Monday Friday and 7am 1pm Saturday.

Once these works are completed, site establishment for the major construction works on the extension is expected to occur in September 2010 with electric train services scheduled for operation in 2013, in line with the completion of electrification of the Noarlunga line.

I dont think we will have any problems with vandalism with the new Port Adelaide Railway station! Reminds me of "porridge", anyone hanging about that station will tend more to pace up and down the platforms, exercise on the benches and thinking about to scale the perimeter. Very clinical with no soul. Hope its only the first stage of a complete upgrade. I'm very fond of the Port, and these recent new developments have been a major drag.

The Mariner culture is being ripped away being replaced by a directionless (sic) yuppie mob who thinks this is the new Fremantle.

I understand your point, but unfortunately the warfie culture died at the Port years and years ago. I prefer a yuppie culture than an abandoned ghost town

im gonna have to go down and have a look at thi station. Sounds hilarious

I did have a look at the new Port station today. Its very very silver, and no one's gonna be climbing down over those fences in a hurry

I know mate. But i'm very disappointed that the Port Adelaide Sailing Club and Searles Boatyard was forced to relocate.

I wonder what is the point calling that area Port Adelaide when there is no/little vessel movement?? Its not a Port now is it. To me, makes tourism to PORT Adelaide less viable.

It looks rather colourless, clinical and unfriendly, but it's clean, sheltered and secure -- which is a lot more than you can say about most other stations. I hope there's some sort of opportunity for community art (with a local primary school or something) or at least a few planters.

I must admit I was expecting something that looked a lot better than corrigated iron sheets, but still it is better than before.. It looks very sterile.

PORT Adelaide’s railway station will get a long-awaited $3 million dollar makeover, starting in November.

The upgrade of the run-down 150-year-old station will include new shelters, improved lighting, fencing and CCTV security monitoring.

The works were part of $20 million project to repair the Commercial Rd rail bridge and was the first step in the electrification of the Outer Harbor line, Port Adelaide MP Kevin Foley said.

Other improvements would occur at the station later in the electrification process, he said.

“When the line is electrified another $9 million will be spent on further improving the amenity of the station, including lowering the platform,” he said.

ELECTRIFICATION CHARGES AHEAD
Another major milestone has been reached in the State Government’s multi billon dollar investment in public transport with short listed consortia asked to submit their proposals to electrify Adelaide’s 100-kilometre passenger rail network.

Transport Minister, Patrick Conlon said successful companies were now being invited to tender for the electrification major works package - following a call for Expressions of Interest in November 2009 that generated considerable interest nationally.

“This is the important next stage of the $2.6 billion, decade-long rail revitalisation program and we hope to start design work later this year,” he said.

“We can then start major site works commencing next year and electrified train services will operate on the Adelaide to Seaford and Adelaide to Gawler lines in 2013.

“The $400 million electrification of the Adelaide rail network will provide a platform for more modern and efficient train services for commuters while reducing noise and local air pollution.

“The program will also create around 2000 jobs for South Australians.”

“The scale of these works is unprecedented in metropolitan Adelaide - we’re rolling this out along a network for over 100km of track across the metropolitan area from Gawler in the north, to Seaford down south and all the way to Outer Harbor.”

The major works package is the largest in the electrification project, covering installation of masts and overhead wires required to power the system, along with railway signalling and communications.

This is the first of two significant tenders for the project; the second is for the construction of a number of substations to power the electrified network and will be called in coming months.

In May last year, the Federal Government announced $291 million funding to extend the Noarlunga line to Seaford and $293.5 million to accelerate the modernisation of the Gawler line as part of its Nation Building Program.

This is in addition to the State Government’s $2 billion, decade-long investment in public transport that will transform Adelaide’s network into a vibrant, state-of-the-art system.

Upgrade works on the Gawler line as a pre-cursor to electrification begin on June 6, with major construction works on the Seaford extension commencing later this year.
