crawf wrote:Yes I agree it should be closer to the city, but Marion is a good choice because its next to Adelaide’s Biggest Shopping Centre (Westfield Marion), close to Glenelg, fairly close to the CBD, cultural centre and the best part its next to a train station (what is about to be redeveloped).

Anyway I think its outrageous SA has not had a international-standend swimming centre for almost 20years, so really I don't care where they put it, I just want it built!!!

btw There’s a wave pool at the Adelaide Aquatic Centre and I think the ACC & State Government are planning to upgrade the centre (well I hope so)
What's wrong with having TWO swimming centres in Adelaide? I would like to think Adelaide's now big enough for that, espcially with the recently increasing population, and especially if participation in swimming increases as they hope it will.

I am bemused though by your statement that the Adelaide Aquatic centre has a wave pool! I've been there many times and never seen it! Where???

There isn't one. I've been dying for one to be built and I'm still waiting.

I've always wondered about this site being approprate for the new swimming centre as from the ground it has always looked small and narrow to me. But from this picture its actually alot larger as i thought... as you can see its comparision with the marion shopping centre itself.

you can also see how far away the train station is, with the shelter circled

Going by the fact that the sign has been up for at least 5 years now (conservative estimate) and that the devlopment was supposedly approved well over a year ago (again conservative estimate) I would say this was probably only a non-core promise by the state government.

So work will not begin.

Pushbutton, It will be going ahead. If you are aware of the current standings in the construction industry, you will know what projects are going through consultation.

I read in the local messenger that a Marion Council member wanted to put the sign up for heritage listing...

I am not being negative. I am strongly in favour of the proposed new swimming centre and I think it's a fantastic idea.

Unfortunately though, that's all it is, an idea.

When the sign went up I was expecting work to start on site within weeks, or at least months.

But the fact is it's now all these years later and NOTHING has happened!

Also if it was approaved a year ago, then surely at the very least construction should now be well underway, if not virtually completed.

If it is going to be a FINA-standard centre, doesn't that mean that FINA has to look at the designs and approve them first? That might be a factor.

Most probably yes, FINA would need to approve it, but logically that would have happened BEFORE the plans were submitted to council or assessed by the government, which was many years ago.
