Federal Budget 2010

#1 Post by AtD » Tue May 11, 2010 8:39 pm

http://www.budget.gov.au/2010-11/conten ... /index.htm

I'm struggling to get on the website at the moment to find the details. I think it might be a good idea to keep budget posts here until the dust settles.

The Tiser reports
http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/in-d ... 5865217437
$1b for ARTC including $312m for Whyalla - Broken Hill line
$5m on SA black spots
$82m for LGA road programs
$50m brought forward for the South Rd Superway (gah they're actually going to call it that)
Funding for city busway and Gawler line still there

Damn Labor Party all they know how to do in my opinion is spend, spend, spend, tax, tax, tax, they brought us from surplus to debt in just under one term. After watching Tony Abbotts speech last night on ABC i am now a Liberal supporter. Here is what i would save money on by scrapping: Seaford Rail Extension, Southern Expressway duplication, O-Bahn Extension, South Road Superway, future tramline extensions to western suburbs, super schools, new Royal Adelaide Hospital and GP Plus Super Clinics. All these projects i dont feel are a real priority we are not going to lose out without them, they are wants not needs. Firstly the Seaford Rail Extension is all well and good in another 10 years but not its not a real priority at the moment, it is best to fix up and electrify the existing Adelaide Metro rail network except for Belair Line which will do alright with just a gauge convert for now. Secondly the duplication of the Southern Expressway isn't absolutely necessary i feel as the current reversible road is doing it job well at the moment, the South Road Superway could be scrap and cut down to just a simple grade separation at the Grand Junction Road but even that we can do without until the federal budget gets back into surplus. The tramline extensions are not necessary at all not even in the near future as the buses and trains are doing well in connecting people to these areas, the O-Bahn Extension we can do without for the next 5 years or so as the buses are handling pretty well from my observations, this could be really cut down to bus lanes and better priority at traffic lights in the CBD. The super schools are not necessary, why build new schools when we could simply close down the schools that arent doing so well and upgrade the schools that are really in need. Further more why should we build the GP Plus Super Clinics and a new city hospital when we could simply do up the hospitals we got now.

In addition if i were the decision maker i would also look at privatising TransAdelaide (or whatever they called now), its worked well for our buses so why not do the same with our trains and trams.
Do yourself a favour and come to South Australia.

yes, why imporve public hospitals, public schools and public transport?

Better give the savings to big business and elite private schools and private hospitals.

What i am getting at is that there are projects that need to be done now and some that can wait, Kevin Rudd says he is a conservative yet whats he doing putting us right back into debt, after the Howard goverment worked hard to get this country back into surplus. I approve of some of the plans put forward by Mike Rann and SA Labor Party e.g. the electrification of our metropolitan commuter rail network, the Northern Expressway and upgrading our bus, tram and train fleet. What i dont approve of is the glitz and glamor projects that can simply wait e.g. the South Road Superway, the Southern Expressway duplication, new hospital, new super schools, new GP Plus health clinics and the Seaford Rail Extension. Unless you want to see higher interest rates, higher taxes and higher grocery prices than we need to spend wisely in this country not just throw money around. Higher interest rates will make houses unaffordable, higher taxes will force businesses off shore which means less jobs and higher grocery prices will help low income and struggling families starve.

Have you heard of creating jobs mate?? Money the workers then spend goes back mostly into the state.

Are you for real?

I don't know if you have recently been to the RAH, but it is a abestos ridden death trap. Adelaide needs a new major hospital

There is a certain eye on the future here too you know Straze. QLD left many things too late - now look at it!(Debt is phenomenal in the catchup).

Of all the concerns Straze posted, you take issue with the only valid one!

The RAH is not an asbestos ridden death trap. Like many old buildings, parts of it have asbestos in it, but it's not doing any damage where it is, and removing it in the normal refurbishment process is a more efficient way of getting rid of it than removing it then knocking everything down and starting again - particularly when the latter option moves the hospital to a less effective location!
