I don't think governments and planners have their head around the wave of new transportation that is on the way. I think out linear parks (i.e. Torrens River) could be the highways of the future...

Sturt St bike lane a costly mistake: MP

Adelaide City Council has agreed to remove a $400,000 bicycle lane from Sturt Street in the city because of a community campaign.

The concrete bikeway was built last year between Whitmore Square and West Terrace to separate cyclists from motorists.

The council will now spend another $100,000 removing the lane.

Adelaide MP Rachel Sanderson says the lane is dangerous for pedestrians and bad for business.

"People couldn't get parks, there was a downturn in their [business] turnover," she said.

Jeff Smith, who has a town planning business in Sturt Street, says cyclist have not been using the lane.

"The cycling public wasn't familiar with the concept and they continuously rode on the carriageway," he said.

City Councillor Richard Hayward says removal work will start as soon as possible.

"There's a whole raft of reasons why it wasn't successful," he said.

"We trialed it, it didn't work, we made a decision in the best interests of the responses to the stakeholders and that is to return it to how it was before."

File this one under "Had cake, ate it too" - if cyclists weren't using the lane, how was it dangerous for pedestrians?

Give cyclists more than 2 weeks and maybe they would use the carriageway!!! Seriously, who shops at Sturt Street anyway?? Can't think of a single business .. My god this is a disgrace. So that is it then? No more for the separated carriageway concept in Adelaide, all due to a couple of traders having a whinge. This little local government fiasco draws parallel to larger scale debates over the mining super profit tax and carbon trading schemes, business groups blowing things out of proportion - and Government, pandering to these unrepresentative groups, not having the conviction to drive change and reform.

I'm sure the ACC has learned many lessons about protected bike lanes from the Sturt St exercise that can/will be applied elsewhere. A bit premature to say this is the end of it for Adelaide. Two steps forward, 1 step back. Keenly await the outcome of the review.

Why the move to docx format, when .pdf is a format more people will be likely to be able to open? .docx can only be opened by Word 07 onwards. I suggest that if you want to continue using word formats for these files, to use .doc so that they are compatible with older versions of Word.
