The days of crowds braving cold, wet, windy miserable conditions to watch poor standard footy (impaired by the shocking conditions) are surely over. First rate amenities for the public (and corporates), crowd comfort and accessibility (excellent public transport links) are essentials to continue to draw crowds in the modern era. Live telecasts provide a more comfortable option than braving extreme elements, especially now that scheduling of games includes more twilight and evening matches.
This makes a covered stadium a must.

Upgrade Adelaide Oval to a certain standard but don't destroy the ambience. Re-direct the 'extra' funds to a new covered, multipurpose stadium in the park lands which can also be used to attract more top quality attractions to Adelaide.

It's not too late for a backflip. The deal does not yet seem to be set in stone! There must be some creative funding solutions available to the state government. It will require a mindshift from the anti-any progress set but it's time. The SANFL can pitch in from the sale of some of the land around AAMI stadium. Potential members could also be willing to pledge (and pay) a 'new stadium progress fee' (in advance) to a govt. audited fund.

Yesterday's game is exactly the reason why AAMI Stadium has to go!. Not many people are going to bother travelling to a poor located 1970s Stadium with hardly any shelter, when it is a windy 12- 13 degrees and bucketing down.

We don't need a new stadium with retractable roof, what we need is complete covering for spectators from the rain = Adelaide Oval :)

Though it's not every day we see conditions like this. I reckon it would of been one of the worst weather conditions we have seen for a AFL match in ages.

AAMI Stadium looked like a swamp and it was farking cold yesterday!. Felt like under 10 degrees with that strong cold wind

I dont really understand why crowds have fallen out of love with wet weather 'footy'
perhaps they are falling out of love with the game itself

surely a full roof is unnecessary in Adelaide. those things cause more problems than they solve. as long as there is cover for the spectators, that is enough. however the roof design of Adelaide Oval looks to be quite poor and wont provide any cover for wind and marginal cover for rain. it seems more designed as a sun shade than anything else.

Looks decent to me,

Though remember this a concept, not the final design.

I'm talking about the proposed grandstands.

Though the U/C Western Grandstand looks like it will provide decent shelter.

I'm sure there will be some kind of 'clear' covering between the roof and grandstand, so the spectators wont get hit by the rain and wind from the west.

you're quoting a Channel 7 reporter and you expect credibility?

seriously, you need to go buy some perspective mate
I don't need to buy anything. The fact remains Australia is not a soccer loving nation, the A league is full of unsustainable clubs, no exciting growth in crowd numbers....

yet we want to host a World Cup at the cost of BILLIONS of dollars. And what will the long term result of the WC. Well as we found out from the Olympics, the main attendees were infact Australians. Security nows sucks up alot of resources. And the NSW government is still paying off debt from the Olympics. Long term result as well, the Australian Governmnet is left with an even bigger debt, Australia is left with even more unsustainable stadiums, particualry soccer stadiums.

What do we gain out of this? Brand Australia apparently, and a few weeks of soccer filled fun action time!!!! The report commissioned by FFA even suggests a Billion dollar loss!!! YAY HAPPY TIMES!

The very fact that FFA chewed through $30m to put a bid together (at tax payers expense) should raise alarm bells.
comparing the World Cup to the Olympics is just
I know, the Olympics appeals to a much larger proportion of our trading and tourism market.

As for the calls for an undercover stadium, if we could afford it, I'd be all for it. As it stands we probably cant. And the realistic truth is that Adelaide Oval provides a much better and cheaper option for the funds avalible.

Are you saying that paying $450 million dollars for say an extra 15 -20,000 seats is a much better cheaper option????? Sounds pretty expensive to me.

The way things are going this so called, "Not a penny more, made up $450 million dollar", figure is going to blow out to the point where we may as well build a new Multipurpose stadium with a roof. The State Government's already thrown in an extra $85 million. Not to mention with a Federal Government grant of say $250 million and the sale of land at and around Football Park (West Lakes) I dont know maybe $50 - 100 million there, the figure just keeps getting bigger? So I beg to differ.

This issue is purely Political (Liberal vs Labor). If the will is there the money can be found, that I'm 99.9% sure of.

One thing for sure - rann & foley will deliver something (anything) otherwise they're absolutely gone in the next election. I bet they're thinking about that already...

yes, personally I couldnt give a shit if politicians backflip or change their mind, as long as the most sensible decision is made in the end

unfortunately pride gets in the way of common sense in politics

in a pinch I think a marriage between AFL and Soccer sharing a venue is do-able. a marriage between AFL and Cricket is also possible.

but a union between Cricket, AFL and Soccer will never work

absoloutley, nothing wrong with admitting mistakes and correcting them.

Delibiratly misleading the public just for votes before an election then backflipping is a differant kettle of fish, not saying thats what labour has/will/is doing.

At the risk of repeating myself, It's a pity that it seems impossible to separate politics and the provision of sports infrastructure in this town. It's a situation which risks not only wasting huge amounts of money but also the construction of inappropriate facilities.

As others have said or implied here, it should be a matter of sitting down and analysing our needs over the foreseeable future, looking at all options and taking into account all costs.

As we're not trillionaires in SA, some compromise is probably inevitable; if we use community money, we have to consider other demands on the budget. It would be likely to come down to the best set of compromises. The questions are simple: What do we need? Where should we build it? It would be interesting to see the views of a neutral consultant on these questions.

That approach should give us the nearest to the ideal solution - what sports we should cater for, whether we redevelop AAMI, redevelop AO or start fresh at some other site.

We are where we are now because we started the wrong way. If it's true that we started with a dream of SACA's, then we were always going to end up redeveloping Adelaide Oval, for better or worse.

Perhaps the market should have driven this - some government contribution but pro rata grant or loan or in land, with cricket and football paying repaying from media fees

We're hardly out of the woods yet - whatever is spent designing the 'present' $543 million development (if Whicker's right) is likely to be extensively (and expensively) rehashed if we get the soccer and the feds throw in another $250 million. And what will the extra $250 mill be spent on? More seats? Replacing the Bradman Stand? Someone must have an idea about that. I'd do no more work until after the FIFA decision, then at least we'd be playing with a full financial deck. But politics gets in the way of that, plus AOSMA is owned by SACA and SANFL with no voice from soccer or anyone else. Add a nominal $50 million from the western grandstand investment (regardless of any overrun there), and that's $843 million in cash. It had better be good.

I've said everything I want to. Unless any useful information comes my way, I'm going to sit back and watch.
