Considering the building next door looks like it's not going anywhere perhaps they'll give the blank concrete an aesthetic treatment of some sort.AG wrote:It wasn't ever going to be anything but a blank wall due to building design regulations that relate to the safety of adjacent buildings built right up to their property boundaries. depends... if the neighbouring building happens to contain Playboy bunnies then maybe... if it happens to contain an inner-city retirement village then Russian Roulette may become a nice tourist attraction for UrbanestAG wrote:It wasn't ever going to be anything but a blank wall due to building design regulations that relate to the safety of adjacent buildings built right up to their property boundaries. it's now taller then the old QANTAS building, and is getting to be almost as tall as the Stamford (I don't think it'll reach it though, but yer )

You may understand it, and still bemoan it.zills_86 wrote:why does no one understand this!?AG wrote:It wasn't ever going to be anything but a blank wall due to building design regulations that relate to the safety of adjacent buildings built right up to their property boundaries. Thankyou Prince George. i DO understand it very clearly and yes i still bemoan it.....however it doesn't mean that the wall has to be a plain expanse of nothingness. As Mono suggested, i hope they give that facade an interesting treatment to lessen the obvious impact of an otherwise boring wall that is so visible.Prince George wrote:You may understand it, and still bemoan it.zills_86 wrote:why does no one understand this!?AG wrote: It wasn't ever going to be anything but a blank wall due to building design regulations that relate to the safety of adjacent buildings built right up to their property boundaries. On a side note; It appears that with the notably fewer number of new and progressing developments happening in Adelaide at the moment (and as such, posted on this forum), that some of the members of S-A are resorting more and more to nit picking and tiresome argumentative posts just to pass their time....Lets hope for the sake of this forum and more importantly for our great City, that some new developments of significance are announced or started soon.

In your last para you have touched on something I have also noted bm7500. One would hope that the things you mentioned do halt - unfortunately cuts the tone of the forum down. I end up just skimming this kind of thing.

who knows? they could put a sign up on that wall as big as the sign for the Crowne Plaza in Hindmarsh square. That sign changes everything and makes the building look fantastic

It would be blocked by the Stamford Plaza and old Qantas House

Not to mention that the building next to it is NOT heritage listed and hence could be developed anytime soon.crawf wrote:It would be blocked by the Stamford Plaza and old Qantas House
There is no point beautifying a property boundary. It is an unnecessary cost.

On top of that, the blank wall provides the building with fire protection should a fire happen to break out in the neighbouring property. Will wrote:Not to mention that the building next to it is NOT heritage listed and hence could be developed anytime soon.crawf wrote:It would be blocked by the Stamford Plaza and old Qantas House

That's all well and good, but I think there are two points to be made. One is that not all blank walls are made equal; you can have a blank wall that meets all the necessary fire protection requirements, yet still has a treatment which is not aesthetically offensive (if not pleasing). The other, and more important, point is that it is eminently possible to design buildings that are not mindless upward extensions of plot boundaries, and therefore buildings that do not require blank walls. I think this is what some of us would like to see.AG wrote:On top of that, the blank wall provides the building with fire protection should a fire happen to break out in the neighbouring property. Will wrote:Not to mention that the building next to it is NOT heritage listed and hence could be developed anytime soon.crawf wrote:It would be blocked by the Stamford Plaza and old Qantas House

Although, that said, I actually like this development and think that it is one of the more acceptable circumstances of a blank wall.

Don't forget, none of the painting of this building has started yet, we might be pleasantly surprised with a few coats of gray on the eastern boundary.
