Stadiums Around the World

#1 Post by adam73837 » Sun Jul 18, 2010 7:41 pm

Hello all,
I have found some pages on the net that have given lists of what the author perceives to be the best or most beautiful/ weird stadiums in the world. I am hoping that this new topic can just be a place for people to hold discussions about how stadiums look and for people to put forward some of their own (rational and realistic) thoughts as to how we could incorporate similar things in Adelaide. It is not my desire for this page to become another forum for mindless rants, but rather for the reasons I have just explained.

The sites are:

http://www.sportspromedia.com/notes_and ... rts_venue/

The one stadium that really stood out to me was the World Games Stadium in Taiwan:

One thing that struck me about this stadium was the grassed area that they have at one end of the stadium :applause: . Perhaps we could incorporate something similar into Adelaide Oval where we could keep the trees and landscape the hill to flow on from the stands.

Here's a little segment from this website: http://www.nssac.gov.tw/english/HomeSty ... n_01_1.htm
Building Highlights?
URBAN PARK
Boasting a broad space, the area surrounding the National Stadium of Sports Affairs Council was designed as a green-landscaping park in order to relieve the anticipated traffic congestion accompanying diverse activities after inauguration, meet the requirements of emergency evacuation, and improve the environment with well-conserved ecological systems. With the landscaping integrated with the National Stadium, even when there are no events being held, citizens coming here will also be attracted by the natural environment and the beauty of the stadium building.

OPEN STADIUM
Conventional stadiums are designed according to the concept of concentric circles, and events are held in enclosed space. The National Stadium is an architectural structure with the entrance facing south; such open space planning for stadiums is rare worldwide and conveys a cordial feeling in warmly welcoming all visitors. Also thanks to its openness, the stadium is harmoniously integrated within its encircling environment.
Again, I don't want this to become another place for mudslinging to occur. :)
I take back many of the things I said before 2010; particularly my anti-Rann rants. While I still maintain some of said opinions, I feel I could have been less arrogant. I also apologise to people I offended; while knowing I can't fully take much back. :)

Bayview Stadium, eh? Here's what Wikipedia has to say:
Bayview Stadium known formerly as New Bayview, and for sponsorship purposes, as the First 2 Finance Bayview Stadium, is a football stadium located in the Scottish town of Methil, Fife. It is home to Scottish Third Division champions East Fife F.C., and is the third smallest stadium in the Division. It was opened in 1998, after the club relocated from the original Bayview Park across town.

The stadium can accommodate up to 2,000 spectators all of whom are seated in a single stand running along one side of the pitch. As with Strathclyde Homes Stadium in Dumbarton, open areas for future expansion are present. In 2008 plans were announced to increase capacity with the erection of a covered terrace/stand at the sea end of the stadium. Due to the economic climate in 2009 these plans have been put on hold however.

The site of the stadium is near the mouth of the River Forth and the pitch is overshadowed by the now derelict Methil power station. This is due to be demolished by 2011 which will improve the overall surroundings of the stadium considerably.
I was fascinated to learn more about Bayview Park - what could drive you to relocate to a tiny ground overshadowed by a derelict power station? A devoted fan site compiled a lengthy history of the old park, and it's beguiling reading. I was particularly impressed that they chose to build some of the renovated terraces out of anti-tank concrete blocks, and also that, long before this age of "iconic" stadiums, they had "an iconic part of the stadium, the isolated Directors' box".
Image
With East Fife now being a First Division side the directors decided to make full use of the space above the dressing rooms by building the box in order to provide "first class amenities for visiting directors". ... It was a strange structure that stood out from the rest of the ground and kind of gave a "them and us" message to the support. Having sat in it once, it did create a really strange atmosphere for watching a game. That might explain why Gavin Murray kept his job for so long - maybe it didn't all seem so bad watching it all from in there!

A reason for this weird perspective I feel being the fact that it was covered by yellow sheet plastic instead of glass initially. It was later replaced by clear plastic and possibly later by glass itself (?).

Ooh, even better - there's footage of an old game at the ground:

For all the carbon-fibre stadiums with air scented by designer fragrances, where every heated, undercover seat comes with a controller allowing you to alter the outcome of the game if it fails to please you, seeing thousands of people crowding open terraces in windy, rainy Scotland to watch their team get flogged by 3 or 4 goals underlines to me what being hardcore really means. Makes us look like a bunch of ponces, frankly.
