Four Adelaide building sites closed last week as flow on strikes from the successful 25% rise demand against Samaras began to filter through the local industry. There are likely to be more strikes as more Enterprise Bargaining Agreements come up for renewal.
Unfortunately, the strikes are likely to hit big jobs rather than small ones eg the Aquatic Centre at Marion (where the CFMEU is orchestrating a picket of form workers preventing concrete being poured), the Adelaide Oval and the new RAH. The strikes have the capacity to blow out costs significantly. Strikes and demands are suggested to have cost around $200,000,000 at the REMM Myer Centre development (paid for by the State Bank, the Myer Centre cost $1,000,000,000 but was sold a few years after completion for $120,000,000).
Here we go - building strikes ahead?
