[COM] Adelaide Oval Redevelopment
[COM] Re: #U/C: Adelaide Oval - Western Grandstand Construction Th
The new grandstand is not that high but Adelaide Oval is pretty long and this new stand goes
all the way down one side of the oval - that's how it can have a capacity of 15,000.

nitpick alert: Hindmarsh capacity is 16,500 and SACA documents state that the new western Stand will hold 14,000 spectatorsricecrackers wrote:I still find it hard to imagine 15000 people fitting in that stand...considering thats the capacity of Hindmarsh, it just doesnt look that big

Big infrastructure investments are usually under-valued and & over-criticized while in the planning stage. It's much easier to envision the here and now costs and inconveniences, and far more difficult to imagine fully the eventual benefits.
[COM] Re: #U/C: Adelaide Oval - Western Grandstand Construction Th
Hindmarsh stands look larger to the eye because they are so steep
Prob only 2 days max until the entire 2nd tier structure/flooring/base is done. Still looks like they will need to put in the terraces in between the stand and the fence, but that wont be a huge job. Unless they leave a silly gap like infront of the sir don stand. Anyway looks great, but it was cold riding past today

I got an excellent view of this development (and the CBD in general) from the window seat of my Rex flight whilst flying into Adelaide this afternoon. I reached for the i-phone camera but remember i'd turned it off before boarding the plane! Will endeavour to snap another when I fly again in 2 weeks time.

great progress, the first seats can't be far away, I'm interested ib how the first level will pan out...will there be a wide terrace between the seats closest to the boundary fence and the steps up to the first elevated seats...if its too wide like the bradman stand, I think it will look bad. Thx xaragmata for your new pics

The gap isnt that big, in fact its way smaller then it was before mainly due to the fact that far fewer people will need to use it. Most of the people that are going to use the stand will be funneled out the back and not forward. Good views of the layout and consruction can be made from the top tier of the Bradman stand which is always freely accessible.

That's good to hear. I seem to remember Adelaide Oval being a ground one could just walk into to take pictures from a long time ago...has it always been this way? Are there other stadiums that do this?I can'y imagine Wembley for example having an open door policy:)mattblack wrote:The gap isnt that big, in fact its way smaller then it was before mainly due to the fact that far fewer people will need to use it. [COM] Re: Adelaide Oval Redevelopment - General Discussion Thread
Received this from SACA today RE the "article" in the 'Tiser yesterday.
SACA Refutes Advertiser Article
Dear member,
Please find below a copy of the media statement released by SACA today in regard to an article published in The Advertiser today, Monday, August 9, 2010.
I want to assure members that the SACA Board remains committed to delivering a world-class 14,000 seat grandstand. We have a very clear understanding of the budget and the procurement process and I am equally confident in the financial framework that has been put in place to manage this project on behalf of members.
The South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) said today the article on page 3 of The Advertiser contains the following factual errors:
1. The Advertiser claims SACA was seeking to extend their guarantee by another $20 million or seek a $20 million grant. This is incorrect. The Advertiser was told of this on Sunday by SACA. SACA has not sought in any way and does not need any further funding for the western grandstand redevelopment.
2. The Advertiser stated that SACA had already obtained an $85M payment from the Government. This is incorrect. Should the redevelopment of Adelaide Oval proceed, as has been previously confirmed by SACA, it will then receive $85 million as payment for its assets at Adelaide Oval.
3. The Advertiser said that SACA had also gained a $30 million guarantee which will convert to a full commercial loan. The Advertiser was told on Sunday by SACA that this guarantee/loan forms part of the $85 million dollars should the project proceed.
SACA president Ian McLachlan said he was disappointed that once again The Advertiser had chosen to print speculation, despite being told that SACA had not sought and was not seeking the additional funding claimed.

One things which suprises me about this development is the fact that its going to take three years to complete.
From my perspective I don't see any reason why they couldn't start demolishing the existing stands in March / April
next year (after the cricket season is complete.) I would imagine this process would take about six months which would
mean construction of the next stands could begin at the end of next year. Constuction of the new stands would take appropximately
15 months or so I would imagine. This would mean that the new stands could be completed in March 2013 in time for the AFL season
that year.
I am not a civil engineer so I don't really know the time frames involved in this type of project but three years seems like a long time.

[COM] Re: Adelaide Oval Redevelopment - General Discussion Thread
SACA announced today that the viability of the development of the eastern side of the Adelaide Oval would depend on the provision of carparking, for which there is presently no funding. Neither the government nor AFL/SANFL/SACA want to spend money on a carpark, so a commercial operator would have to be found. With a new bus stop and perhaps a tram stop at Adelaide Oval, outer urban commuters could drive to Adelaide Oval, then park and walk or ride. 100% occupancy by 10am every day, and good trade at night too! SACA and SANFL would reserve the carpark for match days, which are mostly weekends anyway.
Who would operate this potentially highly profitable carpark? Hmm. Which major carpark operator has just sold a carpark in Grenfell St and is cashed up? Adelaide City Council.
Conflict of interest? What's that?
ACC is having a behind closed doors meeting with AOSMA tonight. It would be interesting to see if a council operated carpark is on the agenda.

[COM] Re: Adelaide Oval Redevelopment - General Discussion Thread
I'm just going off the top of my head here, but isn't the ACC's influence on this development limited to the issue of using the surrounding parklands for parking?
If it is, where's the conflict of interest if its major concern is tempered by something that would make it money?

[COM] Re: Adelaide Oval Redevelopment - General Discussion Thread
I'm probably wrong about that though as I'd imagine any increased footprint of the eastern stands/encroachment onto the park lands is also an issue that the ACC might have some say about.

I heard Kevin Foley discuss this on radio back several months ago. The three year frame you mention is the longest scenario and it is based on construction being done in stages to allow cricket to be played each summer. He said there was also the possibility of completing it sooner it up but the Oval would be out of action for one cricket season.ghs wrote:One things which suprises me about this development is the fact that its going to take three years to complete.

I would be prepared to lay money that the ACC are not going to be the ones to operate the carpark, that AOSMA will operate it and the revenues split between them and the sporting codes. At most ovals, the parking is the bit that actually makes money.stumpjumper wrote:SACA announced today that the viability of the development of the eastern side of the Adelaide Oval would depend on the provision of carparking, for which there is presently no funding.
