yeah I saw that, utter shit.

I would still prefer PT in the CBD to be improved and more density done there, but I gather the ACC has no vision for that (with restrictions and the like) and the state government don't either.

regardless higher density is a must.

The comments below are quite hilarious, but also sad:
Prospect and Churchill Roads would want to return to double-lane road all the way - both experience traffic jams daily already. South Australia's road infrastructure is a joke!
If they are so close to good public transport, why would they clog up the roads more than they are already, apart from maybe a few more buses?
Between the main north railway line and Churchill Road from Park Terrace Ovingham right through to Dry Creek should be allocated as a future extension of the northern expressway. No more building or redevelpoment should be permitted in this corridor and one day when the time is right buy out the remaining properties so the expressway can go ahead. Without a direct access northern link to the Park Terrace ring road that bypasses all inner northern suburban roads through Prospect & Enfield council areas, will result in an even bigger traffic jam as years go by. This is yet another example of a 30 year plan that has no proper long term vision. Also a start date for the rail and freight cirrdir from Dry Creek running west fo Pt Wakefield Rd to Virginia needs to be announced as part of this 30 year plan.
Long term vision should be about making a freeway to the city? Where they'll be even more traffic jams? Err, I don't think so...

The comments there are mixed between predictable "this is a future slum" opponents and "more density means less lost farmland" support. I've dropped a comment on there, and I noticed a "Will from Adelaide" - is that you Will? Let's get some more positive feeling there!
Yeah that was me. When I read that article I felt really sad, that there are people who still dont understand we cannot have our suburbs expanding further and further out.

I understand that there are people who still want to live on quarter acre blocks, but there are still many people (such as myself) who still live on quarter acre blocks because there is no choice available.

Amen to that Will. We love our 50s block, but given the chance to move to something like a townhouse is a more interesting location, we'd be happy to give it up.

People are fearful of 'higher density' as they believe it means future slums in their neighborhood. This is simply because they know no difference (ignorance, not stupidity). Our populous are not widely traveled nor educated on such matters (and it's not just an Adelaide idiosyncrasy).

IMHO the state govt must take responsibility here and better sell/communicate the opportunity offered by increased urbanisation. A few long-term stances and campaigns should be mounted: 1) place the countryside on a pedestal, 2) firmly draw urban boundaries and don't cross them, 2) work to overcome public scepticism & distaste for high-density living, 3) get going asap with building a TOD (bowden) as proof of what can be achieved.
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

That's very true, that's why it's very important that we see some really high quality examples showing up that can help turn opinion around. As long as the only reference points that people have are the council housing on The Bill, they aren't going to support the idea. "Better the devil you know", after all.

I have thought that it would be cool to make a TV series built around people living in a compact kind of mid-density neighbourhood. Something like that would help build some positive associations for people, and help give people the idea that ordinary, everyday people (like them!) could happily live there.

that's a great idea - sort of like Neighbours or Coronation Street set in a TOD! :P

There's a sign advertising a Bunnings will be opening up soon at this site.
Site works are well underway, some large old warehouses have been demolished and more are being demolished from what I can see.

Bunnings Warehouse, a hardware store chain with stores in Australia and New Zealand, received approval for a new store in Islington, South Australia.

The new warehouse, which will open by early 2012, will be located at the meeting point of Churchill Road and Regency road in Islington.

It will offer specialized trade supplies and home improvement items.

Bunnings will invest over $25m for the new store. It will be spread over 3 hectares and will include a main warehouse, timber trade areas, nursery and car parking area.

The new store is part of a 24 hectare new retail development for Islington. The development includes bulky goods and hardware tenancies, a major supermarket, shopping centre and a mix of other retail centers.

The development will provide 90 new job opportunities.

Bunnings is owned by Wesfarmers Limited based in Perth, Western Australia.
They are doing something there.

I have also heard that there will be a Savers Op Shop there too but not sure on which side of the road it will be on considering both sides have been cleared now.

Ditto to that Metro. To think it used to serve the workshops - had up to 800 working there.

Are we getting confused between Islington Station and Islington Works station? Both are in terrible condition but Islington Works hasn't been used for years and is not really accessible to the general public.

Bunnings soon will be opening their doors in Islington. GWA have moved out down Richmond way near the interstate rail terminal and major earthworks happening between the Islington Rail yards and Jack Watkins park (Mount Islington) the slag heap off Churchill Road.
