I spend nearly all day in the city as a student, and have worked in the city at various stages. But we have no say over the future of the city. Strange.


I can understand that ratepayers have a bigger say, but still. Its qaint. I can only imagine the younger apartment dwellers will change the demographics of the council though.

I must remind you that only 30% vote – hence with such small numbers getting your friends that live in the city to vote is how you can influence the outcome.

With 4 strong candidates I think I only need 2000 votes to win - EVERY SINGLE VOTE counts.

Young people do not vote because they think their vote is meaningless. I am the youngest by 13 years, the most qualified and only really digital literate candidate.

So:

Brainstorm of who you know in the city and call them for a chat. I will meet you and them for a beer if you can get just 3 together! Can Sensational Adelaide crew find 10 or more voters for a beer?

I've spoken to about a dozen Adelaide resident friends/acquaintances so far. They've been mostly positive. Most of them have never voted in a council election despite having lived there for almost a decade. Most of my friends started out living in North Adelaide student share slums in the early 2000s and loved the location so much that they are still there.

(Stephen, have you looked at campaigning amongst the university's colleges? There's buildings full of uni students who attend Adelaide/UniSA and live in North Adelaide.)

I'll count myself as one of the younger voters, and I have never voted in a council election. I might be swayed to vote this time round, and for the record I actually have two votes! (Own/live in the city and also own/run my own business in the city).

Not true. Anyone who lives in the city or North Adelaide and is an Australian citizen can vote. It has nothing to do with paying rates.

I always wondered if this was the case or not. Looking at the Adelaide city council website it's not really mentioned. I fall into the same situation, and while they each fall into different wards I was unclear if I can vote twice without running the risk of my votes being thrown out.

As AtD said in the post immediately prior to yours, you don't have to be paying rates to be eligible to vote, simply an Australian citizen living within the City of Adelaide. If you are enrolled to vote in South Australian elections, you'll automatically be sent out details on the local government elections.

Who can be enrolled?
* Australian citizens over the age of 18 years of age living in the Council area who are on the State House of Assembly Roll will automatically be on the voters roll (provided their details are up to date)
* Residential occupiers who are not eligible to be on the State House of Assembly Roll (eg. Non Australian citizens) must complete the prescribed form and lodge it with the Council should they wish to be eligible to vote
* Property owners and occupiers (who are not residents), including a nominated person for a body corporate or a group of persons/body corporates, who are listed in the Councils assessment records, are also entitled to be on the voters roll, but may be required to apply to the Council for enrolment.

No individual can vote in more than one of the above capacities.

Great to see this conversation ensue! Most people do not understand and that is why they feel disengaged with the process. All the answers below are correct but to confirm:

You just need to be a resident - if you are enrolled to vote in State/Federal elections with a city address you are a voter in Council elections and it comes in the mail.

You cannot vote twice - if you have your signature on two votes the both go in the bin. Food for thought - that means your vote is as powerful as any person that owns 30 properties!!!

Who's up for a beer? I would love to meet a few more of you and would really value the chance to have you bring voter friends.

but unfortunately i'm enrolled to vote at my parkside address, even the people who own the property I rent don't live in Adelaide so they can't either.
