Street preachers silenced by court ruling
A group of Christians has been banned from preaching in Adelaide's main shopping precinct.

The South Australian Supreme Court has backed an application from Adelaide City Council to ban the preachers from Rundle Mall in the city.

The council cites complaints from shoppers and retailers.

The religious group has denied claims its members are too noisy and make racist or sexually-offensive remarks.

It has accused the council of breaching constitutional rights by impeding political free speech.

The council wants a temporary ban made permanent, arguing the men do not have permits so are in breach of council by-laws.

Justice Timothy Anderson imposed an interim injunction while the parties prepare more detailed arguments.

I bet you these censored preachers are falling over themselves to censor parts of the Internet deemed harmful to the children. Oh, and naughty movies. And violent things. And the gays.

Good news - i'm all for freedom of choosing ones own religion, but ramming it down the throats of others is just not kosher.
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

They seem to be getting the Australian and American constitutions confused.

I bet you the people that applaud censoring preachers hate the thought of censoring the internet.

Hypocrisy much?

No, because they're completely different things.

How will the courts (council / police) deal with something like this, should it happen in Adelaide's streets? My guess is that they will bravely do nothing,
like the secular French.

This is all illegal in France: the public worship, the blocked streets, and the private security. But the police have been ordered not to intervene.

I'm a little wound up on this exact topic at the moment, so sorry if I'm too harsh in my reply, but that story is f*cking ridiculous and deliberately inflammatory. All else I'll say is think very carefully before taking as fact anything presented on Network Robertson.

Watch who you're quoting there X, that's a bit of a misreporting of a street protest by a Christian propaganda group. Maybe it is illegal, but then again when French farmers protest by blocking streets and dumping produce in the city it's the same.

People need to keep their beliefs to themselves. If they want to practice Islam, what ever flavour of Christianity, Hindi... what ever, then fine. Just do it on their private premises in an orderly fashion. Don't come out onto the street and scream abuse at passers by. And don't interfere with the Government (hello Christian lobbyists and Family First I'm talking to you). Everyone is entitled to live how they seem fit, as long as it doesn't interfere with other peoples' entitlement to live how they see fit.

In what way was the "street protest" misreported? Am I limited as to who I quote? In my own city, a certain religious group has impacted on my rights and
freedoms - I am no longer free to use the rubbish bins on the Adelaide Station concourse, as they have been removed in case members of that group
imitate "7/7" or Madrid, and I am always seeing reminders on the buses not to leave my luggage unattended. It may be in case someone nicks it, but
somehow I think it refers to something more sinister. Many years ago, I left my fishing bag on the Outer Harbor train, but was lucky enough to get it
from the lost property office, minus the bait and berley. These days, they might send in the robot and blow it up.

I haven't seen any street preachers in the Mall for many years - don't even know if the Hare Krishnas still jangle their way back and forth. From memory,
they were restricted in how often they could parade, but not completely banned.

Sorry X I was a bit vague there. I meant that the article you linked to isn't one from a main stream news service. It's a propaganda tool from the empire of Pat Robertson. Everything you read there should be taken with a pillar of salt. ;)

He's the one who came out recently after the Haiti earthquake saying that it was God's punishment for making a pact with the Devil, that the September 11 attacks and the Hurricane Katrina flooding of New Orleans was God's punishment for the US's abortion policy. He also predicted that the end of the World would come back in 1982.

Put simply, he's a nutter.

Yep I agree that simple things like rubbish bins no longer being available and bags left unattended being 'sploded, are a problem. But let's not either tar all of Islam with the terrorist brush OR ignore that other religions contain dangerous groups.

As to the street preachers in the Mall, they've been there most Friday nights for a couple of years. The usual pattern is that they set themselves up with an amplified PA and start shouting at passing shoppers that they are "going to hell". Not in a nice way either, they are full on abusive and VERY confrontational. After a few minutes of this someone calls the cops and they are told that they are not to use the amplifier. So after the cops have withdrawn they start shouting their abuse at people again, a crowd forms with people goading them. Sometimes someone throws a few atheist questions at them. But it usually ends with the cops telling everyone to get on their bikes.

Recently they've taken to standing on the corner of KWS and Hindley streets at lunchtime shouting some unintelligible rhetoric at bemused pedestrians waiting at the lights. This is not so bad, but they really come across as complete looneys and they scare the tourists. ;)

Oh the HKs; they were banned from the Mall back in the (70s?80s?) but have made recent return. All they do is troop up Rundle Street and the Mall banging their drums and dancing a little. Back in the last century it might have offended "upright" citizens, but these days people just treat them as another busking act (I'm pretty sure some people think they were part of the Fringe).

(Question, did the STA dispose of your bait and berley because it would stink lost property out, or did someone nick it? )

I take your point about Pat Robertson claiming that A B or C is a judgment of God ... anyway, thanks for the background on the Friday night preaching with
amplifiers ... I'm not normally in the city on Friday nights, apart from looking at the Lantern, Northern Lights and the like, so I haven't come across it.

I was in the city today, but didn't notice any preachers - too busy looking at building sites. The bait was mince meat, and bread berley, so I wasn't
surprised they threw it out, before it turned into gents. If you can remember the HKs in the 70s and 80s, you might remember the Griffs closing
down sale that went on for years - it was a furniture store in or near Regent Arcade. There used to be a Speaker's Corner on Frome Road where
people could go & preach / spruik / whatever, much like the Domain in Sydney, where it is more theatre & entertainment than hassling & annoyance.
Maybe the Council could direct preachers / political spruikers to such a site, where they might just add a bit of colour without annoying anyone. (?)

They have enough trouble controlling the balloon men :)
