Thanks for that.rhino wrote:Osmond Gilles, first Colonial Treasurer of South Australia. Glen Osmond was on land he owned. Gilles St in Adelaide is also named after him, as is Lake Gilles on northern Eyre Peninsula. When the SA Commission was established, Gilles advanced 1000 pounds to meet preliminary expenses and, in due course, became Colonial Treasurer. He arrived in SA on The Buffalo. He was also a foundation member of the South Australian Literary Association, and introduced Saxony and Merino Sheep to South Australia. He was also involved with the erection of Trinity Church and paid off most of the construction costs.AtD wrote:Here's a question. What does the OG in OG Road, Klemzig, stand for?
In Pike's Paradise of Dissent, Gilles is described as having "an unbounding confidence in his own opinion, but no courage to act upon it alone and unassisted".
Unusual character.

Very heavy rain today! Some roads were flooded out like a dugout bush!

It's 30c and it's only 9am in the morning! Standing in the shade is very hot right now! And I've been waiting at the tram stop for half an hour because they keep coming by "Full, sorry no pickup"!

Adelaide was very busy today for a **wednesday. I suppose because it was good weather, it's school holidays and christmas shopping. But the number of people and the traffic too felt more like Sydney or Melbourne, than Adelaide.
If only it could be like that all the time

I too was in the city tonight, and share your observations. Adelaide is getting better each year. I remember even a few years ago, even with the mixture of nice weather, school holidays and Christmas, it was never like this.metro wrote:Adelaide was very busy today for a **wednesday. Re: Beer Garden
The weather has a lot to answer for - being particularly stunning as it has been, there's no longer a mad rush to Glenelg as the sun sets and people try to escape the blazing heat, for example, but instead there's a steady crowd all day.
