Beer Garden
Re: Beer Garden
It's about 3km in length, and I'd imagine back in those days they didn't have all the machinery they do today.
Re: Beer Garden
well there you go, we built a road for a memorial, that seems rather strange.
next time i'll get down there i'll have a look.

Not that unusual for the time - think Anzac Highway, the Great Ocean Road, and the many Avenues of Honour located around the country.capitalist wrote:well there you go, we built a road for a memorial, that seems rather strange.

Anzac Highway used to be called Glenelg Road, until after WW2.Omicron wrote:Not that unusual for the time - think Anzac Highway, the Great Ocean Road, and the many Avenues of Honour located around the country.capitalist wrote:well there you go, we built a road for a memorial, that seems rather strange.

Re: Beer Garden
Just out of interest, does anyone know how Makris Group is travelling at the moment?
Re: Beer Garden
Scooter, Brecknock Hotel is on the corner of KWS and Gilbert St. It's a fantastic pub. On St Patricks Day they used to serve green beer there, and the crowd spilled out on to Gilbert St and blocked it. Back in the 80s when I was chairman of the (rock) Climbing Club of SA, I shifted our meetings from the Orphanage to an upstairs room at the Brecknock, and as far as I'm aware they've been there ever since. Had my Bucks Show there many years ago too, and a huge farewell show before I pissed off overseas for a while. Great pub, sad to see it go!
I read in the paper last week that a hi-rise student apartment building is going to be built there by some Asian dude who lives here in Adelaide and is rich enough to not need a secured tenant.

Ha! I didn't know that either - makes perfect sense as well. Glenelg Road - we are an original lot. I do get annoyed at it being called a Highway however more like a freaking car park at times .Norman wrote:Anzac Highway used to be called Glenelg Road, until after WW2.Omicron wrote:Not that unusual for the time - think Anzac Highway, the Great Ocean Road, and the many Avenues of Honour located around the country.capitalist wrote:well there you go, we built a road for a memorial, that seems rather strange.

Re: Beer Garden
Are you sure about that Norman? I've seen it called Bay Road or The Bay Road on old maps, and according to Wikipedia it was originally called Adelaide Road, it being the route from the Governor's landing site at Glenelg to the proposed site of Adelaide.Norman wrote:Anzac Highway used to be called Glenelg Road, until after WW2.Omicron wrote:Not that unusual for the time - think Anzac Highway, the Great Ocean Road, and the many Avenues of Honour located around the country.capitalist wrote:well there you go, we built a road for a memorial, that seems rather strange.

Re: Beer Garden
It's all relative. If you were coming from Adelaide it would be called the Glenelg Road and if you were coming from Glenelg it would be called the Adelaide road. You see it in between a lot of country towns; road is called "TownA Road" until halfway where it becomes "TownB road"; depending on your point of view.rhino wrote:... it was originally called Adelaide Road, it being the route from the Governor's landing site at Glenelg to the proposed site of Adelaide.
Exit on the right in the direction of travel.
Re: Beer Garden
I certainly agree with you Mono, but I have never seen any record of it being called Glenelg Road - I have, however, seen it referred to as Bay Road or The Bay Road, particularly in captions for old photographs.

Re: Beer Garden
Anyone caught wind of this yet? The city council and a number of creative-types have been running this pretty stylish community campaign called 'Already Home' -- celebrating Adelaide as a place to live, invest and develop.

The two films already up are an interesting/pretty watch:http://alreadyhome.com.au/
Already Home is an experiment in local exploration and community interconnectivity.
This website is a community of Adelaide city locals who share inside knowledge of their home, in their own words. These stories are told through film, photography and written word.
The Already Home stories are submitted and hand-picked by locals and offer behind-the-scenes info of their city. This website is a celebration of the unique lifestyles of those who call Adelaide home.

Re: Beer Garden
This is a great opportunity for me to mention MapCo's collection of old (19th & early 20th century) Australian maps, including many from SA and Adelaide: http://archivemaps.com/mapco/aust.htm.rhino wrote:I certainly agree with you Mono, but I have never seen any record of it being called Glenelg Road - I have, however, seen it referred to as Bay Road or The Bay Road, particularly in captions for old photographs.
In the 1929 street directory, it was a bit of a muddle. Starting from the city end, through the parklands it was Bay Road. When it reached Greenhill Road (then Park Terrace), it changed to Keswick Avenue. After it turned just beyond where LeCornu is now, it became ANZAC Highway.
Re: Beer Garden
I've heard it being called Glenelg Road and Bay Road by locals that used to live there. Might have just been unofficial names though.rhino wrote:Are you sure about that Norman? Re: Beer Garden
