Scooter, Brecknock Hotel is on the corner of KWS and Gilbert St. It's a fantastic pub. On St Patricks Day they used to serve green beer there, and the crowd spilled out on to Gilbert St and blocked it. Back in the 80s when I was chairman of the (rock) Climbing Club of SA, I shifted our meetings from the Orphanage to an upstairs room at the Brecknock, and as far as I'm aware they've been there ever since. Had my Bucks Show there many years ago too, and a huge farewell show before I pissed off overseas for a while. Great pub, sad to see it go!

I read in the paper last week that a hi-rise student apartment building is going to be built there by some Asian dude who lives here in Adelaide and is rich enough to not need a secured tenant.

Ha! I didn't know that either - makes perfect sense as well. Glenelg Road - we are an original lot. I do get annoyed at it being called a Highway however more like a freaking car park at times .

Are you sure about that Norman? I've seen it called Bay Road or The Bay Road on old maps, and according to Wikipedia it was originally called Adelaide Road, it being the route from the Governor's landing site at Glenelg to the proposed site of Adelaide.

It's all relative. If you were coming from Adelaide it would be called the Glenelg Road and if you were coming from Glenelg it would be called the Adelaide road. You see it in between a lot of country towns; road is called "TownA Road" until halfway where it becomes "TownB road"; depending on your point of view.

This is a great opportunity for me to mention MapCo's collection of old (19th & early 20th century) Australian maps, including many from SA and Adelaide: http://archivemaps.com/mapco/aust.htm.

In the 1929 street directory, it was a bit of a muddle. Starting from the city end, through the parklands it was Bay Road. When it reached Greenhill Road (then Park Terrace), it changed to Keswick Avenue. After it turned just beyond where LeCornu is now, it became ANZAC Highway.

I've heard it being called Glenelg Road and Bay Road by locals that used to live there. Might have just been unofficial names though.

I just prefer to call it ANZAC Highway.

But you can call it Lucy road for all i care.
