COM: Glenelg Tramline Upgrade

some sort of rail link for the airport-CBD is a must. I've had mates from interstate and overseas comment what a great airport we have but then can't believe the metro/train doesn't link it to the City when its only 6kms away.
Is this proposed Ho or just what you'd like to see, i wasn't sure from your post?

Likewise same visitors were surprised that the tram went right into Vic Square but didn't link up to the train station on North Tce. All thought it a given that this crucial gap in the city's rail network was finally being plugged.
As an aside, when I lived in europe, trams were being built all over the place. Initially in my city the residents & businesses were protesting at road closures, shouting white elephant etc but once built, they found them clean, quiet and four times faster than buses. House prices rocketed all along the routes, businesses flourished and now they wouldn't be without them for anything. As far as I know that experience was replicated wherever they were built and even initial opposition gradually disappeared as neighbouring cities looked on with envy and wanted similar.
The advantage Adelaide has compared to european cities.... is space.

Your arguments remind me of those of the person claiming to be an 'Urban Designer' who wrote - "it would be a pedestrian hazard" - as part of a diatribe against the tram extension in the CITY MESSENGER (070201). I am sure that the thousands of people mown down and mutilated every day by the trams which traverse the Bourke Street Mall will agree wholeheartedly with you. How anyone at all is left alive in that benighted city to our southeast, I do not know. I am amazed that I am still intact after spending nearly thirty years driving around it with all those juggernauts charging at me.
Remember, YOU ARE ENTITLED TO YOUR OPINION, BUT IT IS WORTH ONLY AS MUCH AS THE DEGREE OF KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE ON WHICH IT IS BASED. On this subject at least, it has the same value as a large pile of ordure left steaming in the wake of a male bovine animal as it pulls its wagon (with seats) from Victoria Square to the Adelaide Station and back again.
I'm not at all sure that the NIMBYs of this city wouldn't prefer such a conveyance to the dreaded capacious, clean, silent, non-polluting and path-predictable trams which WILL replace the noisy, smelly, weaving buses in the widest city street in Australia.

Not sure whether the current government or Transport SA have got anything in mind, I do however. I have always had grand visions for Adelaide transport, and I guess a few others on this forum have as well. There are options for a tram and light rail system to the airport. The tram could link the city via Sir Donald Bradman Drive and connect to any tram line in Grote Street or West /North Terrace. The light rail option would link the city by a purpose-built corridor (which is already there, but requiring some tweaking) that will connect to our broad-gauge railway system (which hopefully will be standard-gauge by then) in the Mile End area and bring travellers to the Adelaide Railway Station on North Terrace.Redback20 wrote:some sort of rail link for the airport-CBD is a must. Take a good look at a map from that part of town and see where the light rail can be incorporated. It has been staring at me for years and I am stupified no government has ever thought of it (well, at least not made it public). Do you guys want hints?
We could add the Keswick Interstate Terminal as well, but that would lengthen the route slightly. Guys give me your thoughts.

I myself am in my very late teens, I rarely use the tram line and I still support it. It's an improvement on the interchange linkages between some of Adelaide's most important public transport services.

I do, 'Ho Really'. I have for some years now publicly proposed a comprehensive light rail system as a solution to Adelaide's transport problems. I am guessing that you would use part of the former tram corridor between North Terrace and Henley Beach Road alongside Port and Deviation Roads, connecting with the new tramway at its temporary terminus opposite the western campus of UniSA or proceeding on gauge converted tracks into the Adelaide Station.I have always had grand visions for Adelaide transport, and I guess a few others on this forum have as well. Like AG and Tom, I am in my teens and a good few people in my area like the idea as well. I have probably said this before but a lot of people I know like to go to Glenelg on the tram. However, it is always annoying that we have to make 2 changes from a train to a bus and then from a bus to a tram in just under 2kms. Its more effort then is really needed. I'd like to know because I'm pretty sure I am correct how many of you are rail fans, or rail hoobyists? I'm pretty sure most will deny it but it is pretty obvious quite a few of you are.
