Thank goodness they're leaving alone the building on the corner of Union & Rundle -- that one's a keeper. As for the new building... It's hard to make a comment without more details about its details -- façade treatments and whatnot. But worse things could happen (like the original proposal).

Council plans new parklands project for Bonython Park

ADELAIDE'S forgotten western parklands will come back to life with the newly elected city council planning to turn Bonython Park into a landscaped activity hub.


The draft concept plan was revealed at a meeting on Wednesday night and includes extending the Park Lands Trail, a jogging trail, two new playgrounds, refilling the boat lake, picnic and barbecue facilities, reopening the park's kiosk and upgrading the River Torrens' south embankment with a terraced ampitheatre.

Under the plan, the SA Police Road Safety School - which needs to be moved from the site of the new Royal Adelaide Hospital - will go in the south-western corner of the Thebarton Police Barracks on the edge of Bonython Park, with a purpose-built "learn to ride" cycling track located within the adjoining parklands.

Concept designer Kevin Taylor, a principal of Taylor Cullity Lethlean landscape architects, said the plan would revitalise part of the parklands where past popularity had waned. "The character of this particular park is the remnant infrastructure left over from the '60s," he said.

Reopening the kiosk and landscaping the south riverbank with terraces would bring people back into that section of the park, Mr Taylor said. "It makes sense to further encourage people to use that bank which currently is just a grass bank that's rarely, if ever, used," he said.

At the meeting, councillors asked for an investigation into whether Wi-Fi and a limited alcohol licence for the kiosk could be included in the plan.

It was anticipated the project would take four years to complete in a series of stages.

The 2010-11 council budget allocated $600,000 towards the project, with a $51,000 grant from the Federal Government.

The council had also lodged an application with the State Government for $867,000 to put towards the plan.

Police Minister Michael Wright said the State Government would devote $3.55 million toward the relocation of the Road Safety School.

Councillors will need to officially endorse the draft plan at another meeting later this month before it is put out for public consultation, which is planned for late February.

I don't mind this, but worry the ACC is spreading themselves too thinly. My preference would be to spend this cash making Rundle, Rymill & Vic Park much more amenable.

The cynic in me says the ACC are improving Bonython Park so it can host 'noisy & contentious' events (such as the GUD) and please a subset of east-end CBD residents.

City gets fresh lick of paint

ADELAIDE'S streets will become a colourful gallery for spray-paint murals, paste-ups and more.

Six sites have been chosen to be renewed with art - the Hindley St public toilets, Morphett St bridge west wall and pylons, James Place public toilets, Rundle St UPark York St wall and Topham Mall by the southern entrance.

Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said the Adelaide City Council initiative would add colour and activate dormant areas. "I hope the public embrace this and see it as an indication of how the city is changing," he said.

The council is yet to decide whether the areas will be for commissioned murals or free spaces for spontaneous artwork.

Artist Simon "Store" Burt said the initiative had the ability to show youths their art, which would otherwise be called graffiti, could be a positive thing. "You're never going to stop people tagging but the reason I don't do it any more is because I can get paid to do this," he said
