Everfresh mural will be covered, hopefully it will be incorporated into a new cafe or funky kinda store. The ACC should get these guys back and commission some new stuff from them as part of thier plan to liven up the city.

ADELAIDE’S historians want the State Government to build a museum dedicated to SA history to mark this year’s 175th anniversary of European settlement.

Professional Historians’ Association SA president Geoff Speirs called on the government to conduct a $1 million feasibility study into building a central museum.

“For our Jubilee 150th we went to quite a lot of trouble planning and preparing for that, and a lot of good projects came out of it,” Mr Speirs said.

“The 175th is a bit low key and something like a museum would raise the stakes and give history more of a focus.”

The government has budgeted $229,000 for this year’s celebrations, including grants of up to $3000 for community groups and a month-long History Festival across the state in May.

Mr Speirs said the funding was “modest”, and SA History Council president Professor Wilfrid Prest agreed.

“If you look in the total scheme of things you could hardly say it is enormously generous,” he said.

Prof Prest said the state’s history was a tourist drawcard and it was a “considerable shame” that Adelaide did not have a museum focusing on the city’s history, similar to those in Sydney and Melbourne.

“I’d imagine (a museum) would entail presenting the background to the settlement of SA and placing the unique development of the planned city following the Colonel (William) Light lines,” he said.

Historical Society of SA president Dr Geoffrey Bishop also backed calls for a museum with a state-history focus.

Dr Bishop said to mark the anniversary the Government should fund a lasting project, such as digitally scanning the remainder of the State Library’s newspaper collection, which he estimated would cost $3 million to $4 million.

Adelaide Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said the City Council had investigated sites and costs for a City of Adelaide museum about 18 months ago.

He said it was a possibility but not a funding priority.

Minister Assisting the Premier in the Arts John Hill said while the idea of a social history museum had merit there were many competing demands for funding.

“Adelaide is fortunate to have three excellent museums which chronicle and celebrate our social history: the Migration Museum, the South Australian Maritime Museum and the National Motor Museum,” Mr Hill said.

The SA Museum on North Tce also housed a collection of the state’s cultural and natural heritage, he said.

I think that such a museum would be an excellent idea, and based on the popularity of such museums in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, I don't see why ours would not be the same. Edmund Wright House on KWS would be a perfect place for such a venture.

Look how good virtual reality is and will be. So why not create a virtual historical museum of SA - one that would gather images, audio, walkthroughs etc and documents from around the state and from different eras. The museum would be reachable by anyone in the world with internet access.

What would be the purpose of such a museum? Conservation? Education? Tourism?

Done properly, a virtual museum would do all that, and encourage physical visits to SA and places in it as a payoff.

I disagree, you can't compare seeing something real with your own eyes to seeing it on a computer screen.

For example, I could now google up images of the famous faintings at the Louvre, and it would not even come close to actually seeing the real thing.

Furthermore, the point of the venture is to encourage people to go into the city. A virtual museum would only encourage people to stay at home.

i agree that we dont need another museum

but i disagree that a virtual museum is the way to go. there is too much virtuality, this misses the point of a museum.
museum's are supposed to exhibit history. virtual tours can only be compromised to present whatever history they want to present. (much like Wikipedia)
this is a dangerous idea. we need to protect our historical records.
