Their city stadium is in worse shape than both AAMI and Adelaide Oval.

[COM] Adelaide Oval Redevelopment Thread - Now Includes Poll!

#1622 Post by Pants » Mon May 02, 2011 8:40 pm

I'm at the meeting.

As a general feel from the crowd reactions to various statements/questions, the yes vote will get a majority but not the 75% required.

It's been a frustrating night. Some of the questions/comments from the no camp have been so small-minded it's unreal.

This project isn't at all perfect and there are some hard questions that need asking, but some of the reasons put forward by people intending to vote no have, in context of what's at stake, been incredibly trivial.

remember the Queensland floods rebuild is going to add significant dollars to the cost of this project
there are still other projects such as the new hospital which needs to be built.

if one of these 2 projects goes ahead as a result of this, i think its a no brainer as to which gets priority.

Securing a 75% yes vote was always going to be hard.

Look at the history of referendums in Australia.

The only places where 75% or more of the votes can be achieved in 'elections' are places like Zimbabwe, Syria and Cuba.

This outcome does NOT mean, SA is backwards or Adelaide is a country town. Just look at the results of the poll on this site, as a small snapshot of the wider SA community sentiment. The majority of people want it, it is just that we were left in the ridiculous situation where something so important was placed in the hands of so few.

It is sad, how quickly people forget the hundreds of developments happening in our city and state when presented with 1 negative outcome.

i would dispute that this pro-development at all costs site is indicative of the wider SA community sentiment but i agree that this outcome has nothing to do with whether SA is non-progressive or otherwise

ok what happens next, caus how can such a small, senile bunch of twats hold our city back. State govt step in please

Speaking of trivial nonsense from no people, I asked a family friend last weekend what she was going to vote for, it was no, simply because she didn't like the way the SACA delayed the mailout with the info kit. Thats it, no other reason given. And these are the people that are voting in an important decision

but it will lessen any desire to develop the river front and create a vibrant area for people to visit, breathe more life into the CBD and create a more desirable place to live. Which in turn will drive residential development in the city centre and all the benefits that come along with it.

Perth is building the Perth Arena - only 12,000 seats in all and an embarrassing disaster.

But they are also working on a brand new full-sized general purpose stadium. That project is relatively free of politics (at least at present) and it will be interesting to see how it goes.

On AO - I still think we should try a couple of minor round Crows or Power matches at AO as is. This should have been done as part of the 'yes' campaign, but that campaign was hijacked by the unseemly rush forced by the election etc.

I think that the riverside redevelopment will still happen, even if the AO development doesn't get up. It may happen in a slower way, but more in response to demand rather than by executive fiat.

Be careful - Labor is not exactly a unified ship either. Anyway, politics should not have anywhere near the role it has had in this saga.
