[COM] Adelaide Oval Redevelopment
[COM] Re: Adelaide Oval Redevelopment Thread - Now Includes Poll!
ok but who built Adelaide a new airport also the best in Australia? who extended the tram lines? started improving south road? renewed the bus fleet? got rid of 80 year old trams? built Australia's best Aquatic Centre? who's duplicating the Southern Expressway? electrifying our rail system? building a desal plant? and now giving us both a great city stadium at Adelaide Oval and a brand new hospital for the RAH?stumpjumper wrote:Be careful - Labor is not exactly a unified ship either.
yeah that's right, the incompetent Labor government

I went down to Wayville tonight. The Duncan Hall or whatever it is is proof of what you say. It's a fantastic facility with solar power, underground tanks and very fit for its purpose. It was also built on time and on budget, and we managed to build that with no fuss at all. Will wrote: This outcome does NOT mean, SA is backwards or Adelaide is a country town. Just look at the results of the poll on this site, as a small snapshot of the wider SA community sentiment.
But metro - who built the magnificent Southern Expressoneway?

And the countdown begins..........!!!

One thing that no-one has criticised, but which is deserving of criticism is the 75% figure required for this to proceed.
What is wrong with a simple majority of 50% + 1?
Like I have said, securing 75% of the vote on a free society was always going to be very, very difficult.

I'm very senile ricecrackers. Therefore I propose every single development that ever occurs anywhere in the city or metropolitan Adelaide now needs to get 75% yes vote to proceed. This will make sure nothing will ever get approved, so every cent of our state budget from now on will be spent on roads and hospitals only, forever and ever. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.

Will: SACA constitution.
The fact that approval for such a project boils down to that is an indication of the arse-about way this thing has been done. There are reasons for that, of course, but they make it no less awkward and arse-about. There are more rational ways of trying to procure a project - for example a study of needs, with an assessment of assets, possibilities etc.
NOT a bunch of sports administrators and politicians jostling to get advantage, with flying visits from the likes of Demetriou, and a veil of secrecy over the lot. It's a recipe for chaos, resulting in no-one getting what they want.

Which is why this whole saga and debate is very pathetic. Will wrote:One thing that no-one has criticised, but which is deserving of criticism is the 75% figure required for this to proceed.

From the start I believed they would not get the 75% vote, but hanged onto hope that the project would still go ahead anyway. Though it would still be nice to get the 75% vote, just to boast the moral of the state (and boy it needs it/or maybe I do)
But still, it's very pathetic and will be laughed at from future generations.

Exactly, Metro. I was being ironic. It was Di Laidlaw's baby. She was the Libs' minister of transport, and once again, it was politicised - an attempt to pick up some southern seats. No party has a mortgage on stupidity.Southern expressway started in 1997 and was completed in 2001, Liberals were running the state back then stumpy
Why can't we learn from history?
If the vote is no, a smart politician would announce, tomorrow or sooner, a serious, bi-partisan, councils and community-inclusive analysis of how to optimise sporting facilities in SA. All options open.

Alot of people were worried that the Newcastle Knights members wouldn't get the required 75% to privatise the club, they ended up with 97% when the members voted.
