The day that Adelaide recovered

SACA members have strongly backed the proposed Adelaide Oval redevelopment in an historic outcome that paves the way for football to return to the city.

About 2000 SACA members arrived at the Wayville Showgrounds tonight for one of the defining nights in South Australia's sporting and cultural history.

Following two hours of presentations from cricket officials and questions from members, SACA President Ian McLachlan has announced that 80.37 per cent of voters had backed constitutional changes needed to pass the development.

A 75 per cent absolute majority was needed for the proposals to be carried forward.

Within minutes of the result being confirmed the Property Council of Australia (SA) has rejoiced at the outcome.

Executive director Natahn Paine said: "The Property Council congratulates the South Australian Cricket Association Members for their foresight and community spirit in voting to support the redevelopment of Adelaide Oval.

"This is the outcome that the vast majority of South Australians wanted - it’s a victory for common sense and progress.”

Securing a 75% yes vote was always going to be hard.

Look at the history of referendums in Australia.

The only places where 75% or more of the votes can be achieved in 'elections' are places like Zimbabwe, Syria and Cuba.

This outcome does NOT mean, SA is backwards or Adelaide is a country town. Just look at the results of the poll on this site, as a small snapshot of the wider SA community sentiment. The majority of people want it, it is just that we were left in the ridiculous situation where something so important was placed in the hands of so few.

It is sad, how quickly people forget the hundreds of developments happening in our city and state when presented with 1 negative outcome.

i would dispute that this pro-development at all costs site is indicative of the wider SA community sentiment but i agree that this outcome has nothing to do with whether SA is non-progressive or otherwise
