The good news keeps on coming.

Uni places are deregulated from next year, so everyone is building now. More facilities = more students = more money = more research = more prestige.

Flinders has a small city presence in Victoria Sq that recently had it's teaching spaces doubled after a year of operation. It now has 8 teaching spaces.

It's also built buildings at the Repat and Noarlunga hospitals over the past couple of years. The Repat building has also just had an extension to accommodate new courses, which was finished a couple of weeks ago. On top of that, more teaching spaces at the Repat are due in 2013, with the Rehab/Aged Care expansion. I don't know who is funding/building this last one though.

Small bars 'can spark city revival'

ENCOURAGING “hole-in-the-wall” bars and lounges to open in old city buildings through the introduction of a new licence would rejuvenate the city, a traders group and the Property Council says.

Small bar licences, such as those operating in Perth and Sydney, encourage intimate watering holes to set up in small, under-utilised spaces by reducing red tape.

In Perth, small bar licences are credited with rejuvenating parts of the city with 11 new premises opening since the licence were introduced in 2007.

Property Council SA executive director Nathan Paine said the licences could bring more people into the city and increase safety.

“Effectively, if we get 20 funky bars moving into the area it makes everyone better off,” Mr Paine told the City Messenger.

“If there are more people on the streets we do know it does tend to reduce the crime that occurs.

“We’ve already spoken to the State Government and Adelaide City Council and made them very aware that we are very keen to see this model in Adelaide.”

Mr Paine said Cork Wine Bar on Gouger St had bought a new clientele to the strip and was a good example of the type of premises which could operate under the licence.

Adelaide West End Association president Andrew Wallace also supported calls for the licence to be introduced. He said it would bring a more diverse crowd to the west end and provide for more passive drinking spots.

But Australian Hotels Association spokesman Ian Horne said that the state’s special circumstances licence already catered for smaller premises.

“Gouger St between Victoria Square and Morphett St only has one pub but there is a multitude of small bars,” Mr Horne said.

“Some would say the small licences have taken off in Perth and in Sydney but there (in Sydney) the Lord Mayor is trying to shut them down.”

Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said the way the council enforced state and federal liquor licensing laws and building codes meant it was sometimes hard for small venues to gain approval to open.

But he said he was keen to look at ways the council could cut red tape to encourage the use of older buildings in the city.

Commissioner for Liquor and Gambling Paul White said the special circumstances licence class sufficiently covered the type of premises that operated as small bars.

The licence allowed the licensee to sell alcohol for consumption on or off the premises in accordance with specific terms and conditions, Mr White said.

This 'hole in the wall' style of bar/cafe/eatery is common in Italy. See pikkie from Florence below. To provide space for their patrons they use a 'modular decking unit' that consumes 1 car space, provides a level surface for tables & chairs, and can be erected/dismantled in 10 minutes or so. Might work here in Adelaide as well.

The tram loop he envisioned would go down Morphett Street, and then turn into Gouger Street.

No timeline was given although the premier did say something like "it will happen". There was suggestion that a CBD tram-loop may represent the next tram extension, delaying the extension to West lakes and Semaphore.

wonder why they didnt build the first extension through the city with a city loop and other future tram lines in mind, like with turn-offs and stuff already there so they dont have to disrupt the existing service to build it. Like now that they've decided they want to build a loop they're going to have to shut down sections of the network over a few days, rip out the old track, and then build new track with the curves and points etc

oh well, but then we're talking about the government, and they didnt expect it to be as popular as it turned out to be

you would think with the AO debate finally over a city loop would be a more useful addition.

Maybe for the people who already live in those parts of town, for whatever gets built at the current football park, and to provide transport options to West Lakes mall.

Wasn't it also touted to go down to the Port. Surely that would help the revival of that area.

Looks as though 41 Currie Street may finally be getting an exterior paint job. Has to be one of the ugliest buildings in the CBD at the moment. Would rather it was demolished but this would be better than nothing.

Also looks like the concept for the drop top apartments on the adjacent car park discussed a week or so ago. From realcommercial.com:

Interesting. That would be great if they did.. and i also agree with that later comment that a tramline down Hutt st would be fantastic. Seeing as Adelaide has a grid like setup it really is a perfect place to have more tramline's running through it. wont happen for some time though.
