Love to see this happen - building the river 'into the city' a major plus as long as flooding is accounted for - look at what happened to Brisbane.

Looking at the title picture, it seems site works are already underway! More images here: http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/business/ ... ist=MemberNear $4m upgrade to Adelaide Convention Centre's Regattas restaurant puts it on the promenade
RIVERSIDE restaurant Regattas is getting a near-$4m makeover that will transform it into a two-storey function centre and eatery by Christmas.
The $3.86 million upgrade to the restaurant, which is housed inside the Adelaide Convention Centre, is not part of the centre's $350 milllion expansion.
The new facility on the promenade will have an a la carte restaurant downstairs with a seating capacity of 80 people and a 120-people upstairs function room with an outlook over the Torrens to the Adelaide Oval.
The renovations also include outdoor seating for up to 100 people and a bar for guests, delegates and the public.
Convention Centre chief executive Alec Gilbert said the relocation of the current Regattas Bistro would free up space in the centre, providing space for more meeting rooms.
"The new Regattas paves the way for this (the expansion) to occur whilst at the same time contributing to the revitalisation of the riverbank promenade."
"The idea is to get a much better relationship with the waterfront; it will really for the first time help liven up the promenade."
While the indoor cuisine will retain its fine dining experience, a different more "casual" menu is being planned for the outdoor space.
The two-storey building and its surrounds have been designed by Woods Bagot - who are also designing the overall expansion with London-based architect Larry Oltmanns.
Mossop Construction and Interiors is the builder of the new Regattas.
Construction on the $350 million expansion project is expected to begin by September this year.

Like. They have my approval to proceed.
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

well that's the quickest turn around i've ever seen from the initial story being posted on here and the development commencing

What has begun construction is NOT actually part of the $350 million redevelopment. However, it is welcome nonetheless.

RIVERSIDE restaurant Regattas is getting a $3.8 million makeover that will transform it into a two-storey function centre and eatery by Christmas.

i like this, should help bring a few more people to the area, but what we really need in this precinct is a couple of good bars and beer gardens would draw hundreds of people to the area, think about how busy it would be if there was a game on at the Oval, the place would be packed!!
[COM] Re: Adelaide Convention Centre, Casino & Riverbank Developme
Nice add-on. I like. Now to find an excuse for a function!
[COM] Re: Adelaide Convention Centre, Casino & Riverbank Developme
agreed, - it is a shame that AO wouldn't be used more in summer for big drawing games when being down there would be at it's peak.metro wrote:i like this, should help bring a few more people to the area, but what we really need in this precinct is a couple of good bars and beer gardens would draw hundreds of people to the area, think about how busy it would be if there was a game on at the Oval, the place would be packed!!
the funny part is, people arc on about Friday night games - but all this add on developments I would imagine greater Adelaide would prefer Saturday arvo/night or sunday arvo night to get the most out of the facilities.

From the Independent Weekly.
This is excellent news that will mostly go unnoticed/unappreciated in the wider public realm. TV Production Management is a tough job, and requires a broad set of abilities. Bringing the razzamataz of TV production to the Convention Centre will definitely lift the quality of events.

MasterChef managers move to Adelaide
Thursday, 5 May 2011
The TEN Networks former production manager has joined the Adelaide Convention Centre as manager, Technical Services to add spice to ACC events.
Mark Stewart joins the ACC after 19 years with TEN in Melbourne – most recently as executive production manager, overseeing many of its ground-breaking local productions, such as Master Chef, 7PM Project, Biggest Loser, Talkin’ Bout your Generation and Before the Game.
Mark will oversee the ACC’s audio visual business. This includes production, room themes, sound, lighting, speaker support and more.
“We are thrilled that Mark has joined our globally-awarded team” ACC chief executive Alec Gilbert said.
“We are continually seeking to provide innovative and exciting solutions to our clients and Mark will be instrumental in keeping the Centre?s product offerings fresh, client-focussed and at the forefront of the global marketplace.”
Along with his wife and daughter, Mark relocated to Adelaide over the Easter weekend and joins the Centre at a time when it is preparing for its $350 million expansion, scheduled to begin later this year.
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Casino must take lead for casino upgrade
SKYCITY is being urged to proceed with its $250 million redevelopment of the Adelaide Casino to kickstart the city's Riverbank Precinct.
Advantage Adelaide chief executive Nikki Seymour-Smith said yesterday the Oval approval should clear the way for SkyCity to take the next step.
"Many of us thought since the Oval had been given the tick that would mean the Casino redevelopment would be on its way," she said.
"Where there are technical difficulties or regulatory procedures they need to overcome, that is a matter for them, but I think the proposal they shared with us is vital for that precinct.
"It would be a terrible disappointment if that development did not go ahead."
SkyCity previously raised concern about the level of state government taxes and regulation applying to its Adelaide operations.

quite frankly I would love to see the State Government reduce it's dependence on gambling revenues

From today's City Messenger:
Casino ready for big spend
Local News 12 May 11 @ 06:00am by Alice Higgins
The Adelaide Casino is pressing ahead with a $250 million upgrade following news Adelaide Oval will be redeveloped.
Casino general manager David Christian said confirmation Adelaide Oval would be transformed into a 50,000-seat stadium had secured its plans.
“Basically, we’re ready to go,” Mr Christian said.
“We hadn’t worked out a Plan B, we wanted to see what happened with the oval.”
He said had the SACA members voted down the oval upgrade “it would’ve been back to the drawing board for us big time”.
The City Messenger reported in March the $250m would probably have been spent elsewhere if the Oval redevelopment was blocked.
Plans include extending the casino towards the riverbank, new pokies areas, underground parking and more bars and restaurants.
Mr Christian said the casino, which opened in 1985, had become “impractical”.
“Casinos have become a very competitive industry,” he said.
“We definitely need more restaurants and bars to accommodate more visitation.”
He said the upgrade would entice more locals and tourists to the under-utilised precinct.
“My office looks out over the riverbank and I would be lucky to see two or three people there a day,” he said.
“We’ll get to have the oval and all these facilities within easy walking distance.”
Mr Christian hoped the facelift would be finished by the start of 2014 to coincide with the oval development’s completion.
He said the casino was holding talks with the State Government.
“We’ve put in the proposals, we’re going through due process with them now and it’s a case of finalising the agreement with the government on how we proceed, what we do and working with the appropriate design committees,” he said.
Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said he hadn’t yet seen the full details of the casino plan but welcomed any investment in the riverbank precinct.

Its all happening in Adelaide!!!! The place will never be the same again. There are so many magnets for people to come that it will trasform the city centre into something that is active at the times it was dead. Other than the oval much of it seems to hinge on the new footbridge being built to interconnect the flow of people.
