It is a Qantas plane not a Virgin blue plane.
The one over the Torrens is clearly Virgin Blue.

An Atlas Air 747-400 Freighter, Strategic Airlines A330-200, Qantas 747-400 & a Qantas 767-300 were all diverted to Adelaide on Monday morning due to heavy fog in Melbourne. The Atlas Air jet arrived at 4:15am and the rest after curfew.

Flightpath build ban hits trouble

THE Federal Government wants a ban on building on about 5000 blocks of private land in the Adelaide Airport flight path.
Correspondence obtained by The Advertiser shows that Infrastructure and Transport Department secretary Mike Mrdak asked West Torrens Council and the State Government to implement the ban in a corridor stretching through parts of Thebarton, Torrensville, Mile End, Cowandilla, Brooklyn, Underdale, Richmond, Glenelg North and West Beach.

To cover the southeast and northwest runway the ban would enter into the suburb of Fulham Gardens.

The letter states new dwellings in this area would be "unacceptable" and is seeking agreement from state and territory governments to stop new housing in the so-called 25 Australian noise exposure forecast contour around busy airports.
"Local councils in the vicinity of major airports are urged not to make further residential development approvals," it states.

But West Torrens Mayor John Trainer said there would be outrage if the council tried to implement the building ban.

"They are asking us to break the law because that is not one of the criteria that the development assessment panel is allowed to apply to applications," he said.

"We and the State Government are not allowed to go outside the development act and consider what they are telling us to do."

The ban would clash with State Government plans for the western suburbs, which include increasing housing density in some zones.

The Federal Government asked for the ban after Adelaide Airport complained that it did not have planning control protection for land outside its boundary. It identified a new house on the boundary of the airport for which the council had given building approval despite encroaching 30cm into the airport's airspace.

West Torrens chief executive Terry Buss said the council had told the Federal Government about the application but received no response and had since decided to notify Adelaide Airport of any encroachments directly.

"The correspondence ... just went around the bureaucratic merry-go-round and never came back," he said.

"We are stuck in the middle because State Government plans make it clear we need higher and more dense development in the area and the Federal Government is saying no you can't."

For the record, the house that was built 30cm into the airport's airspace is at the runway end of Knight Street, West Richmond. There are actually 2 units on the site and as much as i love aircraft, the noise at times would be awesome! The place would want to have some pretty heavy duty insulation and triple glazed windows :?

Nice. Sounds like a busy morning at the airport. :)

I flew into Adelaide, returning from Melbourne at about 10am on Monday morning. I saw a -lot- of international planes around, and wondered why there was so many of them parked at the terminal. That'd explain why. Sorry, no pix on my end though.

Such a ban makes sense in West Richmond, but not in West Beach!

Am I right in thinking this ban would only apply to residential building?
If so, it could lead to significant changes in Adelaide's urban form as more businesses locate themselves in the western suburbs.

Adelaide Airport has recorded the following aeronautical PASSENGER traffic performance for the nine months ended March 2011

PASSENGER TRAFFIC REPORT
Year on year passenger growth at 5.7% remains strong, albeit falling marginally from the half year growth rate of 7.4%. In, particular Tiger’s
exit from a number of routes has reduced the rate of growth somewhat although this was partially offset by an increase in Jetstar’s capacity.

There were a number of additions to existing international services late in the quarter, in particular Malaysia Airlines increased their services
from 4 to 6 per week, while Pacific Blue recently increased Bali services from 3 to 4 per week. Regional passengers have continued to grow
at pre GFC levels – recording an increase of 13.7% on prior year numbers and outperforming budget by 2.8%. Services to Port Lincoln and the
strengthening of the mining sector have aided in bringing regional passengers to ‘highest ever’ levels.

A MELBOURNE-bound Qantas plane was forced to divert to Adelaide this morning after crew discovered it did not have enough fuel.

A Qantas spokesman said the A380 from Singapore made the unexpected pit stop around 5am AEST.

He said the low fuel supply was not the result of a leak.

"Engineers have inspected the aircraft on ground this morning in Adelaide and found there were no technical issues," the spokesman said.

"The flight crew found they had burnt through the fuel supplies quicker than expected.

"It was not an emergency landing."

After refueling, the jet carrying 249 passengers took off from Adelaide at 6.01am bound for Melbourne.
Wonder if any shots were taken?

For next summer's peak period Air New Zealnd will boost flights to Auckland to daily services. An increase in capacity of 16%. All part of its new alliance with Virgin Australia.

Other changes that will begin in November are:
1. Pacific Blue to take up Air NZ services between Sydney/Melbourne and Dunedin during the December and January peak periods.
2. Pacific Blue will also operate all Brisbane to Wellington flights while Air NZ will take up all Sydney to Wellington services.
3. Total capacity in and out of Wellington will be rising to 3.5% with more flights to Melbourne. An increase of 10.5%.
4. Auckland capacity to remain unchanged but flights between Australia and Christchurch to decrease by 14%.
Trans Tasman operations will be split 70-30, with Air NZ taking the major chunk, roughly in line with prealliance levels.

Only on the tarmac as it would have been pitch black out in the sky at that time. It would have landed from the sea this morning so not many would have heard it except when reverse thrusting. Took off as the curfew lifted, bummer... couldn't they have waited :)

They say it wasn't an emergency landing, but burning fuel quicker than expected doesn't sound good. Hope they sort it out quickly and that it has no ramifications on other A380s.

I don't see why it would have any ramifications. It was simply a case of QANTAS not putting enough fuel in, knowing that if they burn through it faster than expected (as can happen when there's adverse weather) they could divert to Adelaide. Carrying more fuel than they need is itself a waste of fuel, and Adelaide's such a small detour from the Melbourne - Singapore route that they thought not putting the extra in was worth the risk.

BM, I dunno if this has been covered before, but I take it you work at the Airport? Or are you just a well-informed individual when it comes to Adelaide Airport goings on?

Thanks for the link. Should have checked it out myself. Not sure if anyone was allowed to stretch their legs but I hope those onboard liked what they saw at our airport whether it was inside or outside looking through the windows. :)
