So when the clock strikes 3, every nightspot in Adelaide will suddenly vomit drunken revellers out onto the streets?

For a city so seemingly desperate to improve its reputation, this does it no favours whatsoever.

Like others in this forum, I find Council support of a mandated four hour lockout, beginning at 3am, for city pubs and clubs utterly ridiculous and quite surprising.
I thought the new council would be more progressive.

if the council does this, they'll not only be putting people in danger to themselves,
it'll mean that the police will be running overtime keeping a large crowd under control for a short period of time which is much harder then keeping a smaller crowd under control for a longer period of time,
because fights will be breaking out, the ambulance service will be running overtime, the nightclubs will lose money,
the larger a drunk crowd is, the less amount of morals they'll have
In other words, it's a crap option to close at 3am

it is worse than a crap idea - it is backwards thinking and reflects the type of people in charge at the top.

hopefully, a fringe suburban strip can be found outside the clutches of the ACC to provide the entertainment for the youth (or otherwise) of Adelaide.

At one point Stephen Yarwood was talking about a 'Little India' being established somewhere near the markets. I'm unsure of current status.

So, closing earlier means that people will drink less and throw fewer chairs?

Um, no. You watch as venues open earlier, and drink specials start earlier, and the Casino gets busier after 3am. I for one will certainly be heading into town earlier if this occurs - in fact, it's a boon to my drinking plans, because I will get to have a mandated two more hours of sleep/recovery before work on Sunday morning, and hence I can drink more! People aren't smacking each other up because it's 5am - they're smacking each other up because they're violent drunks, irrespective of the time of day. Come to think of it, I should go to the races so I can be drunk and violent on the tram at 5pm with all the families, which is apparently more desirable than doing so at 5am with the rubbish bins.

Bless their hearts and fallacious assumptions of causality. Yeesh, do they think were were all born yesterday?

Tweeted Mayor Yarwood on this subject he has remained decidedly silent. He's usually pretty quick at getting back to tweeted questions.

This is such a band-aid solution. Why not increase the pressure on venues to enforce responsible service of alcohol?

Some might think 3am to 7am is nothing and that people shouldn't be drinking at this point (I for one am hardly out this late)... BUT, I don't think others should suffer because of this ridiculous backward thinking.

What about hospitality workers? What about the majority of people who go out for a big night and aren't disgusting, violent, louts? What about the promotion of Adelaide as a progressive and lively city?

they used to fine people for spitting in public you know ...and...it used to be 6.00PM closing time for pubs in Adelaide - I can distinctly remember that after coming from Sydney to live. Trying to curb certain behaviours is a hard thing.

Keen to hear the outcome of this discussion on discounted cost of tables for business to provide more smoke free outdoor dining areas.
I am a big fan of smoke free alfresco dining options.

Traders who agree to ban smoking from outdoor dining areas could have their annual licence fees slashed by $430.

Under a 12-month trial, to be discussed at tonight’s City Council meeting, traders who agreed to ban smoking from outdoor dining areas could have their $860 annual fee permitting outdoor dining reduced by 50 per cent.

The proposal forms part of a plan to review the council’s outdoor dining policy to reduce red tape and promote an outdoor dining culture.

Currently there are 350 traders in the council area who hold outdoor dining permits.

If each of those traders agreed to the smoking ban, it would cut the council’s income by up to $150,000 a year.

If the proposal is endorsed, a report will be presented to the council following the trial.

In May, the City Messenger reported traders backed the council’s calls to offer discounted outdoor dining permits in exchange for smoking bans.

Why should the vast majority of young people such as myself be punished for the actions of a small minority?
