Re: APP: Glenelg Cinema site, Jetty Rd | 2 level retail
The 2 level retail building should include a Hungry Jack's & KFC. Glenelg hasn't had a KFC open yet!
For starters, my avatar is the well-known Adelaide Aquatic Centre insignia from 1989.

There's a KFC on the corner of Brighton Rd and Anzac Highway, a short walk up from this site. The Scooter Guy wrote:The 2 level retail building should include a Hungry Jack's & KFC. Glenelg hasn't had a KFC open yet!

The building has been boarded up and scaffolding is slowly climbing up the front.

Unlike watching the Harris Scarfe building get torn down, I won't be heading down to the Bay to watch the cinema be demolished. I think I would literally be sick if I do see any photos, video, anytthing of it being torn down. What a crap ending to an amazing building.

Since the untimely passing of Bob Wallis the present Directors of the Wallis Group don't give a damn about heritage or saving the Glenelg Cinema - or about Glenelg generally. The truth of the matter is that in its last few years of life the Cinema was purposely let to run down - due to bad Management and in some cases simply awful presentation of film.
The Wallis Group have simply become a South Australian Company who care only for their "back pocket", despite their claims of being a "Proud South Australian Company"

yes it's just most of the wrong things are.pushbutton wrote:Is nothing heritage listed in this state?
little ugly cottages in the city, eye sore houses in North Adelaide are all heritage listed
and this, was not heritage listed
that is on the state library's flickr account: http://www.flickr.com/photos/state_libr ... 637179770/
Re: APP: Glenelg Cinema site, Jetty Rd | 2 level retail
The reason why 'little cottages' and 'eye sore' houses in North Adelaide are heritge listed is because gems like the Exhibition Building were demolished in the 50's. 60's and 70's. In the 80's and 90's we realised that by trying to be like the Eastern capitals we were sacrificing our soul, and hence we decided to protect what we had left.
Furthermore, a building does not need to be spectacular to be heritage listed. Heritaae is more than architectural beauty. Heritage represents more than architecture; it tells the social story of our city.

the beautiful southern Art Deco facade could have been retained. For sheer stupidity at choosing to demolish Wallis have ensured that i will never ever set foot in the new structure and will never patronise any business choosing to establish in the new structure. Respect for the community works two ways Wallis. And Wallis have lost my respect by refusing to take into account community passion for this iconic Art Deco facade

the locals know that demolition of the south and south west facade of the Glenelg Cinema in Jetty Road Glenelg is WRONG.
The community outrage can be described as DISGUST.
When will the owners and landlords of property in Jetty Road Glenelg realise that an Art Deco Theme could lift Glenelg to new heights?
The locals are fast abandoning Glenelg -
Norwood Parade is much more fun because it has retained it's heritage.
Perhaps no one will do the right thing until Glenelg is abandoned by the tourists?

Abandon Jetty road Glenelg??
Abandoned by tourists
Abandoned by locals
It is perhaps the only way that owners of property will realise they are making the wrong development decisions to attract back locals and tourists alike?
If the locals and tourists continue to Abandon visiting Glenelg at the rate they are abandoning it now?
Poor development decisions in Jetty Road Glenelg are ruining Glenelg.
Losing the Art Deco Facade of the Glenelg Wallis Cinema is a Bad decision.

Waewick
Art Deco has become Huge in Brighton/Hove in the UK. In Florida there is a city rejuvenated by a Art Deco Theme = note Theme - does note have to be Slavish.
And in New Zealand they have done the same to celebrate Art Deco.
There is no place in South Australia uniquely showcasing Art Deco.
Norwood is successful because it has a theme of integrating heritage of a different era with modern. Successfully. Norwood Parade is Alive.
Glenelg is DEAD and DYING. Because there is no theme, no direction. A bad mix of shops. Not enough parking. And it is getting a Bad Name for Trouble,
Glenelg needs Leadership. But it ALSO needs Inspiration.
No other city in Adelaide has the wonderful array of Art Deco facades as Glenelg.
Elsewhere today I just read a great inspiring idea for a real development on the site.
Ground = shops integrated with the Junction
first floor = medical
next four floors = parking
next two floors = offices
final three floors quality appartments overlooking the Pat to the North and the Hills to the East and ALL built while RETAINING the Heritage Art Deco South Facade.
Such a development is the type that would kick start Glenelg.
And in the Partridge Street Jetty Road area that is currently flat earth behind the shops - build another Art Deco THEMED building
Ground floor = shops and outdoor dining
Next four floors = parking
Next two floors = professional rooms
Next three floors = quality appartments
Top Floor = a function centre with a quality restaurant and training centre
These are real developments that would kick start some real action in Glenelg and still respect and overlook the Art Deco Cinema facade
I am NOT against development.
I am AGAINST Developmental sponsored VANDALISM and short term thinking for GREED ALONE

Re: APP: Glenelg Cinema site, Jetty Rd | 2 level retail
Let me say from the outset that I'm completely in favour of retaining the old cinema facade and absolutely hate the soulless, cookie-cutter development that's proposed.
I'm just not sure, and I stand to be corrected on this if you are a local, that Glenelg is dying and that it has something to do with a loss of heritage.
Isn't Glenelg's vibrancy or lack of vibrancy just a seasonal thing? I regularly head down there in summer and in recent years it's been as busy as I can remember it.
This might also be a gross generalisation, but I would suspect that the type of people who make up the bulk of the summer crowds in Glenelg wouldn't care that much about the odd-historical building being razed or at least wouldn't be put off going.
For me, Norwood and Glenelg have a different feel about them because of their respective locations, with Norwood being somewhere I'd prefer to spend the winter months and Glenelg the summer.
There's no doubting Glenelg's historical significance or the fact that the place would be better off if buildings of heritage value were retained and used and renovated/extended properly, I'm just not sure that it would turn many people away if there were more tilt-up abominations of a reasonable scale along Jetty Rd and more low to mid rise development in the suburb generally.
