I actually don't mind it. It's certainly not groundbreaking architecture but the contemporary design fits niceley within Mawson Central.

As a resident of ML, this development is badly needed as the current Woolworths is very limited and parking at peak times even moreso. It will also be good to see some more diverse retailers in the same precinct.

Could not agree with you more! Also being a resident of ML the frustration of the current Woolworths is just mind boggling. Only 2 entries into the carpark. Hopefully the quality of the service picks up a bit more and they introduce some self serve checkouts. The amount of times during a weeknight the line for the express checkout runs from one side of the store to the other is just ridiculous!

Mawson Lakes town centre expansion approved

SHOP PLAN: An artist's impression of the $40 expansion of the Mawson Lakes town centre.

WORK will start on a new $40 million shopping centre at Mawson Lakes next year, with the first shops open by early 2013.

Stage two of the town centre, which will include a new Woolworths supermarket, 12 shops, two cafes and 40 apartments, was approved by the Development Assessment Commission last month.

Developer Andrew Taplin, managing director of the Taplin Group, said the existing Woolworths would move into the new development on Main St, with its old site taken over by another major supermarket or department store.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Mr Taplin said.

“It will be wonderful for the City of Salisbury, but more so for the Mawson Lakes precinct.”

The houses are soo poorly designed and constructed. There is too much reliance on air-conditioners, and too much reliance on jumping in the car to get anywhere. In the town centre there is only 1 woolies, 1 bakers delight, 1 news agent, and 1 michel's patisserie for a town of 12,000. Also they expect you to drive yet fail to provide car parking. There are only a couple of restaurants and there isnt even a real pub (the Mawson Lakes pokie hall with attached bar and restaurant doesnt count), the only night life is the Mawson Lakes pokie hall which is open until 3am on sunday mornings. Lastly the railway station where trains stop running at 11pm, is right out of the town centre. The train station + bus interchange should be the centre of town, not the centre of a carpark and a freight yard.

As Rhino said, those tilt-up concrete student flats overlooking the Dry creek are "Yuk"

It's an epic failure at the moment, and over the next 10 years it will either get a lot worse or it might improve. I'd rather live in the CBD, North Adelaide, the inner suburbs or Glenelg than Mawson Fakes. and Shuz is right, there is a suburb identical to Mawson Lakes in Melbourne, i forget the name but it sounds just as tacky.

For some reason, I don't find Mawson Lakes as objectionable as other developments, and for the life of me I can't quite put my finger on why. It may well be a matter of location, in the sense that it's not in the middle of nowhere and doesn't contribute to outer suburban sprawl as does Caroline Springs in Melbourne (which I assume to be the ML clone). Modern Melbourne sprawl is truly terrifying - I suppose it must be looked at in the context of its larger population, but my God, it's exploding in all directions.

I like that Mawson is constrained by its location - it's not an endless sea of rooftops and it can't spread as far as it wants because of Parafield, wetlands and whatnot. I like the townhouse-y, warehouse-y, studio-y things (i.e. mid-density, non-apartment block) located west of the town centre, and I like how there are tiny little parks scattered all throughout the area, almost as little surprises, instead of one big oval in the middle of a mass of houses.

I do lament the location of the train station, although I can see why it's there given the goods yard to the south. The town centre shopping whatsit is bobbins, however, and the extension isn't going to make it any better. I'm amazed by how much it reminds me of the ghastly Bay Junction shopping centre at Glenelg - yet another stupid building in a stupid place with a stupid extension planned. No points for the apartment blocks, either - while it's nice to see an attempt at suburban density, it's a pity it has to look like that.

So yes. I don't hate it.

It starts at Mawson interchange, but at right angles to the tracks, & then turns south so would be 300 0r 400 metres from the passenger tracks, but is shielded by acoustic mounds. I guess residents between it & the tracks would hear freight trains rumbling through, but it was quiet while I was there. It is an alternative way to walk to the town centre.

Mawson Lakes is a good development solely on the basis of its density, we will need more of these types of developments if we are to constrain our sprawl. However, I do think it has the ability to improve, sustainable design is obviously not emphasised and it could definitely look to modern TOD's for ideas.. I feel this could be an opportunity missed, but I guess you could say that about any new housing development

I doubt feeder services in Mawson Lakes need the capacity of a tram. Buses can do the same thing at a fraction of the price.
