I wouldn't mind seeing more of the lower profile games transferred to Adelaide Oval over the next year or two so that we are spared the horrid AAMI for the entirity of this period.

They still played cricket during the construction phases of the Western Grand Stand... if they are doing this in stages why can't they keep playing? Or am I missing the logistics here?

I doubt the AFL will want games played at a ground that is half built when there is a fully operational ground available for use. Then again, I never thought we'd see AFL at AO in it's current format. I went to the game yesterday (not a port fan) just to be part of it all and had a great time. It didn't feel like an AFL game, more so an SANFL grand final or the like. I look forward to attending when it's fully developed to see if the atmosphere is different. Was good watching the delayed telecast on fox after the game, good little ad for Adelaide, interesting hearing commeti ask Bruce if North Adelaide was in fact at the cathedral end of the ground (but I guess interstate knowledge of our city is low given it's lack of national exposure).

I was however, very disappointed/not surprised by the 7 news report that went to air after the game which was 100% negative and only featured complaints from patrons about the lack of seating and poor views. Typical misleading Adelaide media.

To follow up on your post, Crawfie - I went to the first ever AFL match at Adelaide Oval yesterday and watched Port Adelaide (much to my dissapointment) win over Melbourne.

It was a great close game, and was a pretty good atmosphere. A decent crowd of 29,500 showed up and proved an interesting challenge for the before/after game travel arrangements for many.

It was great they closed KWS and much of the surrounding streets to traffic and to help ease the movement of pedestrians across the precinct... but...

KWS wasn't really closed. They'd left 2x2 of a 3x3 lane road open to the Footy Express buses that were running through the area. One lane for stopping/the other for through buses which left only the lane of traffic adjacent the footpath open for pedestrians.

No extra train or tram services were provided to help cope with the match-day traffic which was absolutely shocking, considering the provision of Sunday PT services (esp. in Adelaide) as it is, let alone trying to faciliatie appropriate travel arrangements for 30,000 people.

Proof that the pedestrian bridge over the Torrens is sorely needed by the huge crowds of people who literally converged onto the KWS footpath + 1 lane, and then dispersed across Elder Park to the Festival Theatre audiotorium. Theres another bridge there between the Casino and Festival Theatre which obviously needs to be rebuilt, as it is so narrow and struggled to provide sufficient room to cope with the 5-10,000 people crossing over it post-game.

Intreresting to note, very few people took the Morphett Street bridge route to the City West tram stop/Hindley Street precinct. I believethat if there were accessibility (western entrance) to the Adelaide Railway Station, more people would've used this route.

All in all, 3/10. They have a lot of work to do yet.

I find it bizarre that they had the foresight to close King William Road but didn't think to put on extra trams or trains. That's a shit way to sell AFL at Adelaide Oval.

Did you see many people lingering in the CBD afterwards? You always know when the cricket or even soccer is on even as far away as Rundle Street.

You'll have to ask someone else that. I went straight onto the tram and had dinner at the Gov.

But, it seems like the Casino had a bumper night. There was practically a line up to get in after the game.

I had zero troubles geting to or from the game.

I live South of the city and caught the free bus from Big W on Cross Roads. Dropped us outside the ground on KWS.

After the game, sure it was busy walking back towards the city, but my mates got straight on to the free bus back to Big W and I caught the next tram to the Wheaty. No dramas at all.

Stadium looked packed in the outer. Being a SACA member I bought tickets in the new stand. Great views. Can't wait for the rest of the ground to get the upgrade. I said it before after the ASHES but they really outdid themselves with the new stand. People complaining about amenities are the sort of people who don't go to events ever. I barely lined up for a loo (if at all) and getting food and beverages was easy as pie. I can't really comment for the outer, but once the redevelopment has finished, I assume there will be additional food/beverage/toilet outlets for the plebs too .

It's a shame about the match result though.

I guess the real test comes in the middle of July, when it's 8 degrees and pouring with rain, rather than a sunny September arvo... but you know what, people are used to AAMI, it's a winter sport.... suck it up.

I am concerned about moving from a ground of 51,000 to a new ground that will be 50,000. Seems a little short sighted considering the big sell of a CBD stadium is the hopes of a rise in attendance. But hey, a full 50,000 stadium is better than a half filled 70,000+ etc. It wouldn't surprise me if in years to come the hill goes. Would be a sad loss, but a sign of the times. Let's just wait and see how the redevelopment goes. It can't come quicker.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait for 2014 (that's if they finish it on time).

Now to hold our collective breathes and see if the money bags at the AFL will kick in a cent. Ha.

Despite the fact I am a Crows supporter, I gotta say I felt pretty proud to be a South Aussie watching the game on TV. The atmosphere looked great, lots of action and that weather was simply glorious! - Pretty historic day for the state.

However that is appalling but not surprising that no extra trains or trams were added, another reason why Adelaide Metro needs a major shake up. Which needs to happen sooner rather than later.

He certainly does. I dont know the writer but he's a great supporter of the arts and other scenes scene in SA and writes some really supportive stuff,(as you'd know if you read it). But shooting the messenger is always good fun.

Given no Port home game this year (other than against the Crows) has drawn more than 24,000 (with many under 20,000), it is not clear why SACA supremo Ian McLachlan has not been able to negotiate a better allocation for his members than this (especially what they are paying for tickets – see the next item)
The cost of each ticket is $25, against a cost to general public of $26.50. Yes, your SACA membership saves you $1.50 if you can get one of the tickets on offer or about 5%. Wow!
There is no reserved seating for SACA members but as a concession buyers of SACA members’ tickets can access the ground 45 minutes before the hoi polloi to secure their spot. Wow again!
As a SACA member you can’t use your own members’ bar. Yes, this is serious.
As a SACA member you can’t use your own members’ dining room. As above.
As a SACA member you can’t park in either of the northern or southern car parks, so if driving you will need to park somewhere else, like in town.

Ah, the new world of AFL at Adelaide Oval has arrived and as suspected by the whinging naysayers it is not looking anything like it was talked up that it was going to be.

I think that it surpassed every expectation seeing it was a nothing match, Port have been crap all season, bottom of the ladder and nearly 30,000 people turn up. If it was at AAMI you would expect less than 20,000.

I give ZERO credit to this tripe. the guy has way to much time on his hands.
