News & Discussion: Adelaide City Council
Re: News: Adelaide City Council
Councillor,
I sincerely hope that was an error of writing and that you meant the City South Tram Stop, not South Terrace.

About time. Great news.
On side note, would be great if the Civic Trust (I think that's who is in charge) would give the Theatres on Angas St. a revamp. They are looking pretty tired and scrappy.

The street preachers are emptying the shops all around them. Something, anything, needs to be done to get rid of them. It's sad that their actions are offending alot of people, but also affecting the livelyhood of some small business owners as well.
One idea I like is to pay techno man to busk next to the preachers whenever they are around. That way their preaching would become dubstep lyrics...
But seriously, get rid of them.

This upsets me.
I find it so offensive and yet authorities are powerless. How is this democratic? Everyone has the right to air their views but in Adelaides premier tourist destination yelling through loudspeakers homophobic and offensive phrases goes way beyond what should be allowed and accepted.

The preachers can fuck right off.
Free speech is one thing, but outright bigotry and hate is another. There's no place for Westboro-esque bullshit in Australia, and certainly not in Adelaide.
The powers that be need to pull their collective fingers out on this and get it sorted.

Perhaps we need to realise that homosexual activities were a criminal offense in this state - I wonder what caused the shift - popular thinking, relativism, fashion etc. The way we think is extremely interesting. Will the attitude change again - under what pretext and justifications. What has caused the thinking about the preachers - the same thinking???? Just some thoughts here guys. These guys exst in most cities in the west BTW - does it enrich our city?

There is NOTHING enriching about three middle aged blokes with megaphones telling you your going to hell if your a homosexual, liar, fornicator, non-beliver. Holding up stupid signs. The mall is a social place, a place to shop. Its the freaking premier shopping area of this state and these guys (and a few slags as well) are freaking ruining it with their stupid antics. Luckily therewere about 15 cops (good look) watching the preachers every friday night as well. Not only a great look for Adelaide but a brillant allocation of resources. Fantastic.
I felt like pulling out my paintball gun and sending them to hell (ged it)

Re: News: Adelaide City Council
not sure about last night, but for past 3 weeks there has been quite a large group of guys and girls standing around them chanting and whistling, who are trying to drown out anything the preachers are dribbling on about, which is why there is now quite a few police. The issue on the first night of this is that these protesters almost looked part of the preachers so everyone walking past thought they were all Christians
Re: News: Adelaide City Council
I stand corrected; I should have referred to the City South Tram stop, not South Terrace.
The motion on Le Cornu was to ask the Minister to consider revoking the Major Project Status on this non-development.
In my opinion the Le Cornu development NEVER warranted MPS and it was only given on a totally erroneous assertion that the Adelaide City Council was stopping the Macris Group from being given a reasonable chance to develop the site. As I understand it, the reality is that not one of the Macris applications was refused by the Council and the site was even up-zoned to meet the developers ever-increasing demands for development of the site.
Anyway, the then Minister, Holloway, called it in and gave it MPS and then approved the latest bid for up-zoning thus removing all 'obstacles' to development - and now 3 years later we still have a big fat zero in O'Connell Street and Council is moving to remove this blight on our city.
Regarding Preachers let it be clearly understood that Council supports free-speech and the right to speak in public places but NOT when the preaching stops other people from peaceable enjoyment of that public space. We moved to put in place a By-Law to reasonably and responsibly deal with the situation but it was blocked by the Liberal Opposition Attorney-General in Parliament - so we know who to blame for the current impasse.

I agree with the above comments about the preachers
I have nothing against religion. But Bible bashers would have to be the most loathed twisted filth in society, it seriously makes me sick that these hypocrites are allowed to preach their brainwashing crap in the state's premier retail and tourist destination!
It's downright embarrassing for visitors coming to the city, I seriously hope something is done before the Festival Season begins. Because simply at the moment it's bullshit

Guerrilla warfare in Rundle Mall

CHRISTIAN street preachers and a pro-gay rights group are a push or shove away from causing violence in Rundle Mall.
That's the warning from the chairman of the shopping precinct.
Theo Maras told The Advertiser yesterday that the groups had been involved regularly in "guerrilla warfare" throughout the Mall, triggering customers to keep clear of shops because of safety fears.
"There is a real potential for violence," Mr Maras said. "All you need is a group of people to push and shove on both sides and you will have a fiasco."
He said the groups seemed to care more about seeking attention for themselves than their causes.
"We are not against the Bible or the pro-rights group," Mr Maras said. "It is not about who is doing it; it is that nobody should be doing it.
"People have a right not be intimidated or yelled at."
Street preachers representative Caleb Corneloup said the group's Friday night preaching had attracted protests from the gay community for about six weeks.
He said the protesters claimed the preachers were exercising hate speech.
"I've asked them what they say is hate speech, and the only issue they told me is that we believe that homosexuality is a sin and those who practice it will go to hell for eternity if they don't repent," Mr Corneloup said.
"I disagree with that because we have a standard biblical position towards homosexuality."
He said his group refused to stop preaching, despite the controversy and ongoing protests. "Street church is there to stay, we're never going to leave," he said.
Mr Corneloup said he believed the presence of the gay community was in response to his group preaching at a pro-gay marriage rally earlier this year.
The preachers have been at the centre of a legal stoush with Adelaide City Council over the group's presence in Rundle Mall. Yesterday, the council asked the Supreme Court to settle its feud through mediation.
Council lawyers said they wanted the dispute set down for a private mediation - presided over by a judge - before the matter returns to court in two weeks.
However, Justice John Sulan adjourned the matter to be heard at the next scheduled hearing.
Re: News: Adelaide City Council
perhaps it's time to forbid the preaching of religious (and other) messages by use of loud speaker, banners and mobs of people.
would need to find a way to allow for musicians and other legit performers and entertainers while banning preachers.
and the pro-gay rights group, if they were smart, would just ignore these idiots like everyone else and let the law do it's job. The preachers want the attention, confrontation gets them in the news and more mindless followers. They've gone from 1 or 2 guys on boxes to whole mobs of rough looking people with banners and loudspeakers in just a year or so.
It's definitely a cause for a lot of concern and the Rundle Mall traders, ACC and many other people, especially if they're driving away customers.
