Tram push for Henley Beach

BUILDING a tram line to Henley Square and hiring security guards to address drunken behaviour at night.

These are among suggestions being made to improve the precinct.

Residents and traders raised the ideas at a public workshop at the Henley Town Hall last week - one in a series planned to draw up a new plan for the area’s future development.

Evida Cafe owner Richard Antunes, who is behind the H20 and Baju apartment complexes being built on Seaview Rd, suggested that traders hire a security guard for Friday and Saturday nights.

Charles Sturt Mayor Kirsten Alexander told the meeting a tram would address a lack of parking in the area and encourage more tourism.

Trams travelled to Henley Square along Henley Beach Rd from late last century until 1957.

It was suggested at the meeting that a new tram line could be extended from the Grange East station along the old train line route, parallel to Military Rd.

Western Adelaide Coastal Residents Association president Jim Douglas told the Weekly Times Messenger a tram to Henley Square was worth investigating.

“They could bring a tram through the old railway corridor and have it stop near Henley oval,” Mr Douglas said.

Henley Surf Lifesaving Club president Neville Fielder said the precinct needed more free parking.

“Parking is absolutely dire and I would like to see them move the police station to the depot site and use the old police site for more parking,” Mr Fielder said.

Other ideas raised at the meeting included a water fountain, more toilets and establishing a Henley Square group, similar to the Jetty Rd Mainstreet Board, to promote events.

Not very exciting news, but Cafe Primo is moving into the recently renovated old Del Monte Hotel on the Esplanade, with apartments on the upper level.

The current Cafe Primo on the cnr of Henley Beach and Seaview Roads will be replaced by an indian restaurant

This is a few weeks old, but from what I saw today there hasn't been much change - still a bit of fencing, skips & scaffolding on site, some shops stocked, but looks like they missed the opening set for early October (as I understood it). Shouldn't be long now.

H20 and Baju residents prepare to move in

THE first residents are expected to move into the Baju and H20 apartments at Henley Beach next week, with all apartments expected to be occupied by the end of next month.

The Seaview Rd developments, being built next to Henley Square, will include a Foodland supermarket, gym and about 38 specialty shops.

Developer Richard Antunes said the complex still had about four vacant stores to lease, but was confident they would be occupied in the coming months.

The development also includes about 300 car parks.

Mr Antunes said a florist, sushi bar, hairdresser, Flight Centre, butcher and bakery, were expected to open by the end of November.

Fashion chains French Connection, Nine West and Seed already opened their doors last month, with Foodland expected to be open early November.

Mr Antunes is also behind an application for a $40 million development next to H20 and Baju at the corner of Seaview Rd and Main St, including 22 shops and 66 apartments.

The application is expected to be considered by Charles Sturt Council’s Development Assessment Panel in the coming months.

Neither of these areas have been screwed they have been developed and improved vastly, I really fail to understand your warped perception of what you consider " screwed ".
Perhaps we should make Henley beach a swamp again?

I love Henley Square but Moseley Square is the best public square in the country. There's nothing screwed up about it.
