Air Australia plan to start Bris > Adel routes late 2012 as well. Will be good to have more choices.

off topic i know, but this reminded me of my last China Southern (domestic in china) flight about 24 months ago. As soon as the plane touched down (and i mean the instant the wheels hit the tarmac) everyone was up out of their seats, grabbing their baggage, and jostling/pushing forward in the aisles to be the first off. Totally freaked me out.

People do that to a lesser degree here on domestic "business commute" flights. The thing is, I stay in my seat while others jam up against the doors. Then when the isle's clear I wander out and see the people who pressed past me waiting for their luggage at the carousel. So.. what was the hurry?

A site is up for scoot. Fingers crossed they fly to Adelaide. Not a single international LCC flies here yet.

I refuse to fly with them, based on the name alone!


I had a chance to visit the airport recently, the new car park looks huge. Two massive cranes? I had no idea of the scale of this beforehand.

What's your source as to Air Australia commencing ADL flights in late 2012?

I saw it in the article i got the pic from.

It said initially it will be Bris - Melb and Bris - Denpassar (late 2011). Then early 2012 Bris - Syd. Then Bris to Adel and Perth (within 18 - 24months).

5 Air Australia's Airbus A320, a new international and domestic low-cost carrier, will commence flights on November 15.

THE ?new'' Air Australia has become the second airline this week to announce moves into Jetstar's budget territory, today confirming its name change from Strategic and destinations of Bali, Phuket and Hawaii.

CEO and founder Michael James yesterday unveiled its green and gold livery and its plan to revert from a specialist full service airline in red, blue and white to a low cost international and domestic carrier.

Air Australia's first Airbus A320 in the new design, a green and gold boomerang motif on a grey background was rolled out in Brisbane.

The airline has said it plans to launch Melbourne-Brisbane and Melbourne-Honolulu services in December.

“We understand the challenges of the industry and we understand the market,'' Mr James said.

“We also believe that there is mounting nostalgia in the consumer market and in the industry for an airline which offers genuine value and makes it readily possible for families and Australians of all ages to have the chance to fly.''

Air Australia will next month add a second Airbus A330 to its fleet, which also contains three A320s.

Strategic, founded in 1991 ferried Australian troops and equipment to the Middle East between 2005 and 2011, when it lost the $90 million Defence Department contract to rival Adagold.

It was launched as a full service carrier in 2009 with a fleet of Airbus A 320s and A330s but is reported to have lost $2.1 million initially - during the Global financial crisis - then $9.3 million in 2009-2010.

The move comes after Singapore Airlines this week unveiled a new cut-price subsidiary, Scoot.

That airline will seek to fly into Australia, the expanding China market, from early next year using four Boeing 777-200 aircraft which seat more than 320 passengers.

It will have two classes but offer a no-frills service with meals and baggage charged extra, in a bid to bring down costs 40 per cent below “legacy'' carriers such as Singapore Airlines and Qantas.

Jetstar indicated yesterday that it was expecting challenges to its own operations, based in Australia and Jetstar Asia out of Singapore.

“Given the success of Jetstar's Asia services over the past five years, it's not surprising others are entering this market,'' a Jetsar spokeswoman said.

“Jetstar is very confident in what we have to offer customers, particularly with our expanding network and new aircraft like the 787 Dreamliner and A320 neos.''

Aviation analyst Ian Douglas said he expected the open skies policies of the Australian Government meant that Scoot would be able to access Australian airports, possibly concentrating on cities including Adelaide and those in northern states not served by its parent Singapore Airlines.

Mr Douglas, senior lecturer at the University of NSW School of Aviation, said Singapore Airlines was trying to copy the Qantas-Jetstar model by setting up Scoot to compete on intercontinental routes.

“Both Singapore Airlines and Qantas have to compete against the Middle Eastern airlines and of those, only Emirates seems to have the imperative to make a profit rather than just gain market share,'' he said.

“So, if you can't compete directly on price than you can re-invent the business model and put in a long-haul model with more efficiency, which is why we they have Scoot.''

I heard some time ago that Brisbane & Adelaide would be the first Australian ports of call for Scoot. Whilst I welcome another international carrier to ADL, i would be dissappointed if it came at the expense of Singapore Airlines services.

Air Australia will also be a welcome addition here too.

It *might* be at the expense of their additional daily summer flights i reckon. Dropping those extra flights and replacing them with scoot seems like an ideal way to introduce the airline to adelaide and maintain demand.

More international flights in summer

Airlines add additional capacity to their summer (northern winter) schedules.

Cathay Pacific has introduced its first non-stop services from Adelaide to Hong Kong on three of its seven flights a week. The summer flights will allow for same day connections for passengers from Adelaide to 36 destinations across Asia, North America and the Middle East.

Meanwhile, Singapore Airlines has added three flights on top of its daily service between Adelaide and Singapore this summer. The additional services will depart Adelaide on Monday, Tuesday and Saturday.

Air New Zealand, Malaysia Airlines and Pacific Blue (Virgin Australia) have also added additional capacity to their summer (northern winter) schedules.

Awards season

Adelaide Airport has recently received State and national awards for very different aspects of its business - from runway resurfacing to T1 retail promotions.

In October, Adelaide Airport Limited (AAL) won a major national project management award for our work on resurfacing the airport’s main runways and taxiways earlier this year.

AAL was recognised for the complex logistical task of laying 60,000 tonnes of asphalt - the equivalent of re-sealing a 40km stretch of highway. All work had to be carried out at night during curfew hours, and the runway had to be ready for use every morning at 6.00am for the first flight departures. Not one single flight was delayed - a remarkable effort!

Meanwhile, AAL has again excelled at the Property Council of Australia (SA) Shopping Centre Awards. We received gongs for all three categories in which we were nominated – namely Excellence in Presentation, Excellence in Sustainability and Excellence in Marketing (working with the community)

ADELAIDE NAMED AUSTRALIA’S BEST CAPITAL CITY AIRPORT - AGAIN

Adelaide Airport has been voted Australia’s Capital City Airport of the Year by its peers at the Australian Airport Association’s National Industry Awards, held in Brisbane overnight.
It is the third time Adelaide Airport has won the award in the past six years, having also been successful in 2006 and 2009.

The Australian Airports Association in particular recognised Adelaide Airport for completing one of Australia’s largest runway resurfacing projects on budget, ahead of schedule and with no
flight disruptions or community concerns raised. The association said the Adelaide Airport team was “to be congratulated on the success of a major project that will ensure that the
airport continues to deliver significant social and economic benefits to Adelaide and South Australia as a whole”. Adelaide Airport Ltd (AAL) Managing Director, Mark Young, said the achievement
was an outstanding result for the airport and its staff, and in particular for its project management team. “This award is testament to a great team that has excelled in risk and project management,”
Mr Young said. “The team’s efforts in talking with and listening to the local community, and identifying environmental and other issues was a stand out.
“Adelaide Airport Ltd is proud of what we have been able to achieve, both in terms of running an efficient domestic and international airport and through our interaction with the community
and stakeholders.”

Former AAL managing director, Phil Baker, also was recognised last night for his contribution to the industry by being presented with the Aviation Personality of the Year Award.
Over the past couple of months, AAL also has won three awards at the annual Property Council of Australia Shopping Centre Awards for SA, and a national Australian Institute of Project
Management Award for its runway resurfacing project. In 2007, Adelaide Airport was named as the world’s second best airport in the 5 – 15 million passengers category by Airports Council International.
In 2008 it was voted equal best Australian airport for quality of service by the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission.
