Really, I'm a bit miffed about this project.
When they rebuilt the station back in 2006, DTEI (now DPTI) told the public that the station was built in a way that would avoid it having to be rebuilt again when the Oaklands level crossing was to be eliminated.
Fast forward 6 years, 2012, and now they're telling us it has to be rebuilt because they want the rail to go over the road(s).
This will mean yet another closure of the rail lines for several months, inconviencing Noarlunga line passengers once more, which really isn't fair to those using the service having to put up with nearly 3-5 years of on/off closures.
It is an absurd waste of taxpayers money and proof of absolute neglience and incompetence by those working on the project within DTEI/DPTI. And I mean this quite seriously, because I intend to work for DPTI in the future and I think it's very important for organisations, whether public or private to not only accept criicism externally, but also from within.
Shuz,
Do you seriously beleive that your rebuild of Diagonal and Morphett rd will be cheaper, efffect less people during the building process and be quicker than rebuilding the rail line. Think you might need to look into the Cost Benefit Analysis of each project.
If you intend to work for the government you might find that priorities and funding change over time which basically dictates the whole planning process and scope of developments. Since 2006 extra funding has come to rail which means larger projects can now considered where before it wasnt on the raydar due to the inhibative costs.

More trains ,more often and electrified . Is the tonsley line part of the electrification ? What are the timelines
Because on dpti site it's due to finish June 2013 that's only 17 months away
I think I wrote on another thread that do not be suprised if Brighton Rd is included in this planning study with a seperate overpass. This would mean that Warradale station and Hove would go because of the area needed for the slope of the tracks. These two stations would then be emalgamated to form a new station called 'Hovedale'. Very speculative though and very initial stages. As I stated, massive funding going into rail so theres a chance that one or both of these projects will get off the ground sooner than some people think.

This.
If I remember correctly when oaklands was approved the government wasn't even really committed to rail. Tearing the whole lot up was also being considered at the time.
The oaklands project was at the time the largest rail project in years and years and was less than ten million dollars.
Since then the government has committed an amount several orders of magnitude larger to rail. It's a vastly different funding environment with a very different level of government comittment.

in answer to the bold - I have had the feeling that the SA gov't was going to do this for at least 20 years. Evidence of a gradual run down was everywhere (eg every third sleeper in Adelaide yards either loose or totally diconmnectd from the rails in 1986 - the once much bigger system has become much smaller - a very big expense to fix now - as we all know. A sudden realisation of the impt aspect of rail and tram has occurred - none too late!
It constantly annoys me re the potential the lines had .Just think how ther Penfield line could have been used in the NE suburbs.
ADELAIDE - TOWARDS A GREATER CITY SKYLINE

We invite you to have your say by completing an Oaklands Park Rail Overpass Project Planning – Questionnaire. Please complete and return to us by Wednesday 5 October, 2011.
This was nearly 5 months ago and there is still no announcement on concept plans or detail

The number of signalised intersections proposed seems excessive, some of them don't need to be there. If this is the way of preventing the rebuilding of Oaklands Station, then I see this solution as the equivalent of rotating an entire house around just to unscrew a light bulb.
This.
There seems to be a lot of sunk cost fallacy in this thread. If the cheapest and most efficient way of doing things now involves rebuilding the station, then that is the best thing to do. The fact the current station was only built a few years ago is unfortunate, but that just means there should be someone looking into why that rebuild was approved. We don't however have a time machine to go back and change the fact it was built.
I previously lived near the oaklands station while it was being rebuilt. The old station badly needed rebuilding but it was a massive disruption to the local area for months. Buses and commuters driving to the station from south of brighton congested the streets badly during that time. Also, the dust and night time construction noise was very difficult to live with. If the station really must be rebuilt any time soon then the local residents will be ropeable.
I recall attending "consultation" meetings at the Marion theatre where DTEI stakeholder managers said that the station would be moved closer to the level crossing rather than just replace the old station where it was back from the crossing ln the basis that the new station would be more visible from morphett and diagonal making it more noticeable and therefore used more by casual patrons. Howver, moving it closer to the crossing made it even more congested, resulting in it taking around 5-7 minutes to cross at peak times.
Rod Hook of DTEI also said on radio that the new station's placement would not preclude a bridge or grade sep to improve traffic flow at the existing intersection of mothett and diagonal to appease local residents at the time of he upgrade who were demanding to know why the intersection had been left to become so congested for so long. Personally, I think Rod Hook was plain lieing.

State Government reveals plans to build overpass at Oaklands Park railway station
PLANS for a train overpass to ease traffic congestion at the Oaklands Park rail crossing have been unveiled by the State Government.
The $100 million overpass would go over Morphett Rd and include an elevated station, accessed by lifts and stairs.
The unfunded plan includes up to 100 more carparks at the station, as well as walking and cycling paths.
A spokesman for Transport Minister Patrick Conlon said a $2 million study into how to ease traffic congestion at the intersection of Diagonal and Morphett roads found an overpass to be the most cost-effective solution.
"The cost of the project will be dependent on the timing but estimates are beyond $100 million," he said.
The spokesman could not put a timeframe on the project because of current State Budget constraints.
Mitchell MP Alan Sibbons, who has long campaigned for a solution to the congested intersection, welcomed the plans.
"Local residents have been calling for a permanent solution to the bottlenecks at this nightmare intersection for 40-odd years," Mr Sibbons said.
Marion Mayor Felicity-ann Lewis said the overpass would "resolve traffic snarls at the intersection". She said she looked forward to securing funding to ensure the long-awaited overpass was built as quickly as possible.
The plans can be viewed at
http://www.dpti.sa.gov.au and the Marion Council chambers, 245 Sturt Rd, Sturt, from Monday.

That's a very nice looking proposal, though there is more important projects that need to be attended too first. Things like the Gawler and Outer Harbor line electrification and South Road.
Plus where is all this $$$ going to come from?

It's a concept design, not necessarily what will be built.

Having detailed plans ready now enables the state govt to add this project to the
Infrastructure Australia list. Not a bad ploy. Fortune favours the prepared...
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.
