At this stage they've only announced first 2 hours free parking but haven't seen the full details yet.

If only the train line was closer......
With the newly constructed State Aquatic Centre and parking already a nightmare during peak times, this isn't such a bad idea. Though it should be the first 3 hours are free and for gods sake hurry up and spend some serious money on bringing Marion into the 21st century.
I really wish Colonial First owned and operated Marion...
The exterior is nothing special, but that interior is something else...

Good news for the revitalisation of the CBD.
Ummmm... Because people prefer to pay for parking in the CBD rather than pay for parking in Marion?

Well, if you remove the benefit of free parking, you remove the appeal of going to a suburban shopping centre like Marion.Hooligan wrote:Will wrote:

Do you though? So you believe people will be willing to drive further to the city because they don't want to pay for parking at Marion but will then only have to turn around and pay for parking there? Will wrote:Well, if you remove the benefit of free parking, you remove the appeal of going to a suburban shopping centre like Marion.Hooligan wrote:Will wrote:

I would believe people who shop at marion would do so because it is closer to their homes, whether they have to pay for parking or not they would still rather go somewhere closer to home than drive further only to then pay for parking anyway.

....aside from proximity to the suburbs, a covered mall, proximity of the carpark to the shops, provision of trolleys to use at all stores, closeness of stores, lack of noisy preachers, presence of multi-screen mainstream cinema.....Will wrote:Well, if you remove the benefit of free parking, you remove the appeal of going to a suburban shopping centre like Marion.Hooligan wrote:Will wrote:

Well, with that attitude the CBD may aswell close down.Omicron wrote:....aside from proximity to the suburbs, a covered mall, proximity of the carpark to the shops, provision of trolleys to use at all stores, closeness of stores, lack of noisy preachers, presence of multi-screen mainstream cinema.....Will wrote:

Well obviosuly what I said will not apply to everyone.Hooligan wrote:

Likewise not everyone who goes to marion is essentially a local. For example, I live about 11 Km for Marion but only 8 Km from the CBD, but because I can drive to Marion and park for free, I usually choose to go to Marion. Now that the benefit of free parking has dissapeared, I will be more inclined to go to the CBD.
I know I am not the only person for whom this will apply.
So, you can be a smart arse, or realise that even if just 10% of those who visit Marion change their behaviour, it will be a benefit to the CBD.

Anyway, if you get 2 hours free whats the problem? besides seeing a movie who the hell would want to spend longer than 2 hours in a bloody shopping centre?

I like how the media yesterday never mentioned about the 1st 2 hours free, they simply sensationalised that Westfield Marion is introducing ticket carparking for all.
But, any negativity against the awful Westfields is good in my book

I go to Marion probably about twice a month on average, maybe 3 times a month.
I would sitll go just as often if they introduce this and the first 2 hours are free, but I wouldn't go to the cinemas there unless I was still able to park for free for long enough to go to the cinemas and have something to eat or do some shopping.
I also go to the swimming centre about twice a month, and will continue to but I'll either make sure I'm there less than 2 hours, or park in a nearby street if that's still possible!

That is one problem with them charging for parking is that nearby residents will be pissed off with people parking in their streets.

Many regional shopping malls in Sydney are free for the first 2-3 hours, then charge u after that, including most of the Westfield's I've been to.
If we want to stay in a centre for longer than the free parking time, unfortunately you have to drive out, then turn around and drive in again getting yourself a new ticket. It's a hassle, yes, otherwise you just have to fork up if you want to stay on for a longer time.

perhaps as part of approving paid parking, the marion council should require westfield to pay for 2-3 hour parking limit signs to be placed around nearby suburbia, and for the cost to council & residents to implement a local resident parking exemption system.Hooligan wrote:That is one problem with them charging for parking is that nearby residents will be pissed off with people parking in their streets.
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Why should Westfield be required to pay for that? They're perfectly entitled to charge for car parking without having to give extra concessions.Wayno wrote:perhaps as part of approving paid parking, the marion council should require westfield to pay for 2-3 hour parking limit signs to be placed around nearby suburbia, and for the cost to council & residents to implement a local resident parking exemption system.
