Are there any parts of the approval process that have the power to send it back for amendments for being hideous?
I suppose this is unlikely given its a government build.

I still like it. My only concern in those new images is the lack of interaction with the river front - still have that service/carpark road visible. Hopefully that's just because they're deferring that to the Riverbank masterplan to address.

The buildings along the Riverbank are a series of objects in the landscape. Look at AFC, ACC, Stage 1 and now Stage 2. To have a run of buildings that differ from one another is inspiring in my opinion.

The blue coloured renders of the Plenary Hall actually look good.
However, i saw this in the architects notes;
"There are concerns relating to the lack of activation along North Terrace (with large blank walls propsed and two roller doors).....active frontages shown on the submitted plans are indicative only and there has been no commitment to undertaking this development at any stage in the future."

I also am not impressed with the lack of interaction along the riverfront. I do not like the idea of our state govt which is deep in debt, investing almost half a billion for the city convention centre to liven up the riverbank.. and then we see a BS token effort to include new 'temporary' retail spaces. I think they should have axed the whole thing including stage 1 before it even started (Is it just me, it seems like construction has stalled for the last few months?). I think they should have instead funded the construction of more exhibition halls at the showgrounds. They could have built more than double the amount of convention space for a fraction of the time and for half the price. Oh well, too late now
I've done conventions at both showgrounds and the city convention centre, the showgrounds is so much better, access is easy at the showgrounds, in the city it's a nightmare.

Conventions are highly prized business and the competition between cities to lure conventions, especially the big conventions (and big spenders), is fierce!
The CBD (and Convention Centre) is a prestigious building in a great position with proximity to the major hotels, cultural boulevarde and amenities - a huge attraction.
Conventions attract a large number of partners accompanying attendees. These people may go shopping, browse and visit local attractions and go on organised coach tours, including the regions, and they contribute to the overall dollar spend. Pedestrian/tram/taxi traffic is the go - attendees and or partners.
The SAHMRI and extended Convention Centre (and the just announced world class biomedical/health, research, education precinct) has already attracted interest from the appropriate professionals and given Adelaide a head start in luring this Convention market.
The Showgrounds are great for smaller exhibitions and shows eg Boat, Caravan and Camping, Travel, Bridal, Craft, Home etc. The large amount of car parking is an added attraction for the largely local attendees. The location and facilities would not necessarily measure up to the needs and wants of the bigger Convention crowds.
Adelaide would miss out on big Convention business if the Convention Centre was not the venue. And the City Hotel industry would not be pleased.

Spot on Vee. Each facility caters to completely separate markets ... ACC being for national/international conventions and exhibitions, whilst Showgrounds is for local exhibitions.
I also read an article somewhere that ACC has a particularly strong niche market in attracting medium sized conventions ftom the medical industry (can someone validate if this is correct)? If this is so, it backs up Vee's comment that an expanded health and medical precinct would have a strong synergy with ACC.

New Torrens Riverbank development plans allow bigger casino, new hotel
NEW development guidelines have been announced for Adelaide's Riverbank precinct to allow cafes, an expanded casino and new hotel and commercial buildings.
Deputy Premier John Rau announced the reform today, which the State Government forecasts will unlock hundreds of millions of dollars in private investment.
