Another problem with large eucalyts that has gone unmentioned is that at certain times of the year, the flowers/gumnuts attract large numbers of birds. Not necessarily a bad thing, but there was about a dozen lemon scented gums in the rear carpark of the QEH prior to redevelopement. As these trees were planted en-masse in an enclosed area between buildings they became somewhat of a haven for parrots and cockatoos, to such an extent that it was not possible to park or walk underneath due to bird droppings. The birds where almost in plaugue proportions at this island of native vegetation in suburbia. one can only imagine the chaos if a swarm of birds start pooing all over the square.

I doubt we would have to worry about that in the middle of the CBD, but if we did then it would actually be a positive thing. Relatively easy to clean up once a week or so, and having flocks of wild parrots in the middle of a CBD would be a distinctive thing.

Take it you've not been caught in a swarming flock then?

Can I see those plans somewhere? :)

The ones I have seen are with Council at this stage, sorry.

The plan involves a crossing directly from the Market enterance to the Square. This is the best image I could come up with a quick search online.

Ah fair enough! And thanks for the image! If this ever happens, it would certainly make Victoria Square a real impressive place!

Do you know what would be awesome? If when the courts are moved from the former Moore's Department Store building, they pulled the Hilton and the Central Market arcade + Coles down and built a Casino with a new high-rise hotel where the Hilton is, whilst retaining the old building as the centrepiece of the whole project.. And on-top of that, without destroying the Central Market's charm, give the exterior a painted face-lift.

Think of all that, with the newly upgraded Victoria Square...

OR better yet, think of if the surrounding area to Victoria Square became Adelaide's new high-rise development precinct moving the tall-ish buildings more South of the CBD.

I think the whole Central Market is looking old, dirty and ugly, I would love to see it bulldozed and rebuilt into a two storey development with a fresh looking more cleaner market selling produce in the middle with restaurants along the fronts at street level and outlet stores on top of the marketplace.

Does anyone know if there are renders available or at least a floorplan, for the upgraded Victoria Square? I really don't have the slightest idea what is proposed for it. All I know is the pedestrian lights near the statue of Queen Victoria were removed (around the time of the Tour Down Under, I think)

I dunno, all the talk about the upgrade from the news sources available seem pretty vague to me.

The Vic Square website has floor plans of what was initially approved for the first stage (the bit they're undertaking now).

Not overly insightful but gives a rough idea of what will be where and how it'll look.

Btw, has anyone noticed that the new first stage plan for the arbours is different from the masterplan? And there are trees on the perimeter of the event lawn.

Ah, the website's been updated in the last day or two. Seriously hope the arbours concept hasn't gone by the wayside - given their cost, wouldn't be surprised.

Nooooo! It looks exactly like a market should look! If you want a sterilized look and feel, go to a Westfield!
